Extremely grateful to have been inspired by @dynarski.bsky.social ‘s work on proactive tuition guarantees for low-income students and had the opportunity to replicate and extend the work in Texas. Equally excited to be partnering with new universities (y’all know who you are!) on the next phase!

New research alert: Proactively guaranteeing tuition and housing tripled enrollment for low-income students eligible for automatic admission to UT Austin from high-poverty schools #rct doi.org/10.3102/0162... @mattgiani.bsky.social @drflorespolicy.bsky.social @joribarash.bsky.social
This figure shows the share of recruited students who submitted an application to, were admitted by, preliminarily enrolled in, and officially enrolled in University of Texas Austin. Recruited students are both eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and among the top 10% of their high school graduating cohort by GPA as of the end of their junior year. The outcome is the average share among the sample of eligible students in 32 high schools, with half randomized into each treatment arm. Error bars reflect a 95% confidence interval for the sample mean. The treatment effect estimates are from regression models of the UT outcomes on a dichotomous indicator of the Outreach plus Guarantee condition. Percentage points are denoted by pp. The standard error for the treatment effect is shown in parentheses.
Students in the Top 6% of their HS class are guaranteed admission. Among these students the enrollment rates of the treated group was 30.2% compared to 11% in the control. Among students not guaranteed admission (7-10%) the enrollment was 6.1% for the treated and 0.3% in the control
