SO excited when this program launched 🥳 Year 1 results were super encouraging. HAIL-like in magnitude 😍 And then... UT Austin leadership cancelled the program, ordering the fantastic UT research team to disband 😦 Despite formidable barriers, the team ensured the science got published 👏🏼💪🏽

Proactive guarantees of tuition and admission before students apply, is a highly effective way of recruiting high-achieving students that otherwise would not have attended a flagship university

Students in the Top 6% of their HS class are guaranteed admission. Among these students the enrollment rates of the treated group was 30.2% compared to 11% in the control. Among students not guaranteed admission (7-10%) the enrollment was 6.1% for the treated and 0.3% in the control.

We implemented a RCT across 32 high-poverty schools with a limited history of sending students to UT Austin. We reached out to 547 students who received FRPL who were in the Top 10% of their graduating class, in September of their final year. Over 80% of these students were Black or Hispanic/Latino

We show that the enrollment effect is trebled among students who be guaranteed admission, with a similar proactive outreach! The intervention did not increase aid: simply students were guaranteed aid before application the same amount they would receive when admitted

One outlier is work by @dynarski.bsky.social i.bsky.social @kmichelmore.bsky.social, CJ Libassi, & Stephanie Owen, showing that proactively informing students of guaranteed free tuition if admitted to UMichigan (regardless of FAFSA) doubled the enrollment rates of high-achieving low-income students

Tuition and admission guarantees are widely used by universities to recruit high-achieving students who may have not otherwise considered them. However, the empirical evidence of their effectiveness is weak, especially when the tuition 'guarantee' is dependent on the outcome of their FAFSA

New research alert: Proactively guaranteeing tuition and housing tripled enrollment for low-income students eligible for automatic admission to UT Austin from high-poverty schools #rct doi.org/10.3102/0162... @mattgiani.bsky.social @drflorespolicy.bsky.social @joribarash.bsky.social
This figure shows the share of recruited students who submitted an application to, were admitted by, preliminarily enrolled in, and officially enrolled in University of Texas Austin. Recruited students are both eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and among the top 10% of their high school graduating cohort by GPA as of the end of their junior year. The outcome is the average share among the sample of eligible students in 32 high schools, with half randomized into each treatment arm. Error bars reflect a 95% confidence interval for the sample mean. The treatment effect estimates are from regression models of the UT outcomes on a dichotomous indicator of the Outreach plus Guarantee condition. Percentage points are denoted by pp. The standard error for the treatment effect is shown in parentheses.

“The importance right now is in the judiciary.. and in the lawyers who argue on our behalf…” says Rep Joaquin Castro. This is WHY MALDEF matters. There is no major civil rights legislation or law regarding Latinos in this nation that has not been touched by MALDEF. @maldef.bsky.social

If the U.S. Department of Education closes, it's unclear how much money Texas could lose — or how the state might handle a shut-down.

Build on love and friendship. Let's not shame each other but do hold one another accountable. Prepare to forgive and be forgiven. Prepare for the rebuilding. We can do this. You can do this. Don't get distracted. 4/4

They will be the new architects of a system that we were trying to awkwardly fix by convincing others to include the excluded. When we rebuild, we will rebuild with new knowledge, new alliances, stronger values, better research and practice, and more inclusion. 3/4

The hardest part of my day is motivating my students to not lose hope. They ask me how I can stand in front of the classroom, teach the Constitution and public policy, and not cry.We need to show them that making their milestones matter. That their skill sets will be what we need when we rebuild. 2/3

So glad folks are speaking up in their own ways. Next time one of our states gets attacked, let’s all rise together. Texas tears are real, but our Florida friends need us even more…Because we eventually all get attacked. 1/2

Today’s knife on knife seminar was quite exciting. Midlife crisis, preparing for the apocalypse, or just a new hobby for stress release? I’ve also taken up knitting.
