Excellent work and a reminder of why I (we?) love anime. Exciting and terrifying that people that writes stuff this good exists!!! Btw, if I remember correctly, the first article about sakuga I've ever read was precisely a rudimentary introduction of the webgen.

Finally, this isn't mentioned in the documentary, but I hadn't realized they got Inoue to do animation on it. It absolutely is the Shirobako-horse animation meme, but it's so great. Thanks to Yoshida I suppose

It also answers a sort of question I had about her: It might be easy, especially after Heike, to categorize her in a sort of very traditional Japanese aesthetic; Jaadugar kinda breaks with that Her answer is to look for some kind of cultural similarity and build on that

Comparing it with other documentaries, it's also striking how deep Yamada seems to think about the work, its background, "message", universe...

More generally, the heightened awareness I now have of Masaoka's style and impact leads me to doubt that the "Disney of the East" phrase really had any stylistic implications in Tôei The handbook was Masaoka all along, whose style was already very different from classical Disney's

Basically you'd have to consider that effects animation as a dedicated field with a potential for personal expression different from character animation only emerges in the early 70s with Kanada's generation (Effects animation of this kind is almost nonexistent in 60s TV anime)
140
Matteowatz @matteowatz.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
For some time I considered Yasuo Otsuka to be the originator of effects animation in Japan as he had a monopoly on almost every effects scene in Tôei films prior to 1963. But if he essentially just reproduced Masaoka's patterns (to be confirmed), this changes things
140
Matteowatz @matteowatz.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
This is even more significant when you consider that the screenshots are from The Little Prince and Eight-Headed Dragon, that is the point when Tôei makes a clean break with the Masaoka-Nichidô style to embrace a post-UPA "modernist" style

Matteowatz @matteowatz.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Rewatching some old Toei films. One thing that strikes me that I hadn't noticed before (because I didn't know about it) is how close the effects animation is to the patterns set out by Kenzô Masaoka in his animation courses/manuals

Matteowatz @matteowatz.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Of course I don't have access to the full bibliography from France, but aside from the Masaoka/Nichidô stuff, it feels like we know less about this period than prewar production
