what's better than Nancy comic that ends with a shocked face in the final panel? A Nancy comic that ends with THREE shocked faces in the final panel!

AI is clearly a product by and for the kind of people who in ages past bought books by the yard, and who now consult lists like "ten books to make you look smart" before taking a shelfie of their pristine copies of Atomic Habits or Infinite Jest

something extraordinary is happening on Garvaghy Road Northern Ireland. Decent minded protestants & unionists have started to come out to support the Garvaghy residents, against the Orange Order parade madness. This is truly extraordinary. quick 🧵

The British press have long reported on marches and beacons as if they were quaint folk traditions like cheese rolling or morris dancing. This reflects British indifference to Northern Ireland, but also I think creates it. In England especially there is so little understanding of sectarianism

Whenever this pops back up I'm always delighted by the fact that Saufend-on-sji appears to suggest an estuary accent version of "south" rather than a more RP pronunciation. (also a big fan of how Rochford is rendered)

I am someone who has never read any Pynchon but I feel is squarely in the demographic of "person who looks like he reads Pynchon" and so would very much appreciate any recommendations or warnings for a newcomer to the author

watching Sonchiriya today is really confirming that the interval in Whole Bloody Affair is poorly managed. QT should have watched some Hindi cinema (and maybe he did before Hateful Eight?)

Another packed day for Widescreen Weekend, with a mix of for work and for pleasure viewings. Zulu to kick the day off, another dacoit film with Sonchiriya, then How the West was Won - In 3 strip cinerama no less! - and one Battle after another in 70mm

well the positive of staying through the credits of The Whole Bloody Affair to watch Yuki's Revenge is I have something to add to my Grand Theft Hamlet lecture. The negative is that I had to watch Yuki's Revenge

dispatches from the intermission for Whole Bloody Affair - QT has fundamentally misjudged how much the first half of this film needs the ending. On that alone Vol 1 and Vol 2 are the better film.

Omkara was compelling as an Othello adaptation. Dacoit film context really worked and Iago/Langda was fantastic. A slightly bowlderised print that cut some swearing and violence, but fun nonetheless. The Big Country though was magnificent, a new favourite I think. Old, scarred print but still great

In Bradford for Widescreen Weekend. Just finished The Big Country and about to watch Omkara - the first of two Indian westerns I'll be seeing. Such a great opportunity to encounter films and formats I wouldn't otherwise be able to see - and great additional prep for my genre model!

Watching the 50s Lone Ranger series and just notied that they call Tonto's horse Scout. Given the series suggests that "ke-mo sah-bee" purportedly means trusty scout, does this mean Tonto named the Lone Ranger after his horse?

In awe of Junji Ito's depiction of cute aggression
I will appologise right now for my failure to really caputre this, but will do my best:
photo of a frame from Junki Ito's cat diary, a black and white manga. the image shows a deliberately grotesque self portrait of Junji Ito, an otherwise average looking japanese man with glasses but here shown as a hulking round faced caricature with gaping moutha and roles of fat around his neck. His eyes bulge and are veinty with no pupil. everything is starkly shadded. he proffers a finger to Yon, a cat with a weird face who looks a little concerned. Yon seems to be a white short hairded cat of some description. In two jagged speech bubbles Junji Ito declares "Suckle on me!" and "Suckle, I command you!"
