iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

“I heard one cry in the night, and I heard one laugh afterwards. If I cannot forget that, I shall not be able to sleep again.” M.R James from ‘Count Magnus’ collected in ‘Ghost Stories of the Antiquary’.

A skeletal red figure looms over a studios gentleman working by candlelight in a darkened room. A digital rework of a linocut illustration.

Did I need two versions of M.R. James's ghost stories? No. Do I have any regrets about my purchases? Also no. Anyway, I've had Yet Another Idea for a new TTRPG scenario collection. 😅 Does anyone want to give me a pile of money to live on so that I spend all my time actualising all these ideas?

On a lilac-coloured felt desk mat, two hardback books are stacked at an angle to one another. On the lower book, the title is mostly obscured and only a skull motif is fully visible on the black cover. On the upper book, an ornate reflective pattern features books and skulls; the title text reads:
'THE
GHOST
STORIES
OF M.R.
JAMES
Edited by Roger Luckhurst
THE BRITISH LIBRARY'

In the top-right corner of the image, a wooden kumiko coaster is just visible under the bottom of a glass of water.

A digital rework of a linocut illustration I did for my #folkhorroralphabet series. The photo was taken in an old house we stayed in, in Deal I believe. Think this might have been Eden’s room… 😬 Here’s the original linocut print.

The carved linocut plate and print side by side.

Yeah a lot of folk have recommended nasal sprays. I’ll give them a try. Thanks.

There’s a lot of it going round. Not helped by working in a college.

Ah yeah that’s a good idea; maybe don’t olbas oil and steam will help…

020

Thanks I’ll give them a go.

There’s some sinus congestion and some aches and as of today some coughing. Did you find any good remedies?

Each one less effective than the last.

A selection of paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin and various other over the counter drugs.

I’ve never seen and yet I have the soundtrack. I blame Andy Votel.

It’s National Badger Day so there’s no better time to watch the delightful ‘Quarantine’ by Astrid Goldsmith. “A post-Brexit pagan dance fantasy about a troupe of Morris-dancing badgers…” player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/wa...

England of the humming wires. England of the ghosted fields. England of the nephomantic sky. This is where my patriotism lives, not in its ragged flags, but in a land that knows its spectres. – #DAKilroy

Ha I had similar issues. America is frequently my downfall.

All the same that’s some going.

That’s an impressive bout of sobriety. Well done!

Must be something in the air. bsky.app/profile/matp...

I’m so sorry to hear that Nick. Cats are the best. Sending lots of love. x

The Hangman (1964) - Animated short film

In my bed bound malaise I tend to watch a lot of strange short films and forgotten animations. This one is powerful and unnerving. And depressingly timely. youtu.be/HqpUmAy0Cew

These things are a bit silly. But then I'm sick in bed watching Mr. Vampire so it's all relative. #My9albums

Some pretty good albums by MF DOOM, Massive Attack, Aphex Twin. Kate Bush. Pavement, Joanna Newsom, Scott Walker, Joni Mitchell and the Beastie Boys.

I’m full cut now so I’ll have to try again tomorrow.

That soundtrack though. Pure fire.

I mean I do like some but generally the more out there stuff like Magma, Aphrodite’s Child etc.

I’ve spent most of my life wilfully dodging the bloated prog tedium of Pink Floyd but turns out ‘Relics’ is decent. Full disclosure; I’m half cut.

I love the book so I’m intrigued/fearful in equal measure but this is very encouraging!

Hopefully. The college students I work with are largely scathing of it which is encouraging.

The fact it's always so powerfully shit does give me a little hope. But not much.

We've been to a lot of secondary school open days in the last few weeks and MY GOD there's a lot of shitty AI posters on the walls. It's so depressing.

FRIDAY SHOP PLUG! matpringleillustration.bigcartel.com 'Tis the season for ghoulish linocut prints that delve deep beneath the blood dappled soil into the gnarled roots of folklore and folk horror. This linocut bunting features graven illustrations inspired by corn dollies, standing stones...

Linocut artwork carefully printed the directly onto wooden bunting. There are nine different prints across nine bits of plywood measuring approximately 15cm x 13cm each. The three in the picture depict two skeleton lovers, a witch hare and mask of sticks.

This used to have the music from ‘Blood on Satan’s Claw’ and was at least 50% better as a result.
