#WordWeavers Oct 7: Share a line of dialogue that tells us everything we need to know about a character's personality. From Cantata Deeps, Anselm explains his selling technique.
Text reads:
Anselm chuckled. "Ah, my lad, my lad. What is truth, hey?" In response to Cello's frown, he added in a more serious tone. "Something destroyed the freighter. Was it a gas leak? Maybe. Was the captain old and crusty and set in his ways? Most likely. Most of them are." A little smile directed towards Pettrie. "Did I ever claim my story had anything to do with those sensors? I did not. The young man asked and I raised my eyebrows and glanced towards them, and they all assumed that it did. People want to believe, lad. They want to think the universe is filled with tidy narratives, to feel the breath of the divine, and touch wonders inexplicable."

Brass and red velvet. It looks a little steampunk, or something from the Time Machine. It's a telescope, about the size of a small cannon, fixed between two concrete piers, in a small plush room, with the plush velvet armchair providing a comfy perch. Look closer. There is a track for the comfy chair, so it can always be in position. Also, the back can flip to the other side. The astronomer will always have a nice spot to sit. The telescope can only move up and down (and around) not left and right: it is for determining time.

Less comfortable for the astonomer, the phone line, not quite visible. Anyone in the country could call it, at any time, and get the current accurate time.

A teal sky and and orange plain covered with sharp peaks, brilliantly lit (white, pale yellow) on the right face, cross-hatched red shadows on the back face. A pale sun shines high in the sky.

The future of the human mathematician anakedrhymejam.substack.com/p/the-future-o… #AI #math (No easy answers. An interesting read)
While some of the work is tedious and exhausting, a lot of the work is fun. It's fun to sit with a stack of paper and stare off into the distance trying to solve a problem.
To scribble some notes, day after day, until the pieces start to come together. To meet with a colleague and hash out our ideas and approaches and fill a blackboard with pictures and formulas and sometimes even a theorem and proof. Even the writing and proofreading is its own kind of Type II fun: the rhythm of the detail-oriented work, the realization of a missing step that has to be filled in, the satisfaction of a paper brought to near perfection.
Now there is ChatGPT and Gemini and Claude (and Kimi and Grok) and we're eyeing them uncomfortably, wondering if we want to bring them into the fun, and whether there will be any fun left for us if

The palette is a series of bold colours: cadet blue, rust, tan. The background paints these in a gradient from blue in the top left to red in the bottom right. Across the background are a series of horizontal lines, also in these colours, of various lengths, with gaps. The long lines tend to be blue, creating wide bubbles surrounded by bands of lighter tan and rust froth. Abstract, but the eye -- always -- looks for form and meaning. A dancer, reaching back over their head? A map of islands? Surf rolling in?

We are in a darkened room. There is a small slanted wooden desk in front of a window. A book lies open on it. A tome, with an illustration on the right hand page. There is a candlestick on the windowsill. The window is bright and offers us a view of a greenery: cypresses, and a steep hill beyond, a few pink flowers in the foreground. The sky is so bright as to be white.

It is a monk's cell, and it doesn't seem like a terrible place to spend your days in silent contemplation.
