The hypocrisy of a culture that urges people to feed their children AI-generated word salads, but cries out in mock horror when a prize-winning author is suspected of doing the same to his readers. It's *almost* as if AI isn't what's causing the problem.

The example of Jason Arday shows that the target is chosen in such cases *because* they are not blameless: it is best if they can be shown to have messed up before as it lends credibility to the more serious charges against them. The other, unrelated accusations are used to muddy the waters; they...

Good ol’ Ebith Pitf… Still slightly regret not buying this for any of my Jo friends (and think I only didn’t because I have 3 and wouldn’t have known which one to give it to 🙃).

Black and white striped jumper on a clothing rail reads: Non, jo ne regrette rien - attributed to Ebith Pitf.

I love this scene where Tom Ewell is haunted by a ghostly Julie London (born #OTD in 1926) singing Cry Me A River in a variety of extravagant outfits.

This is not, on the whole, an especially successful recording of Dardanus (a sadly underperformed opera), but Christiane Eda-Pierre as Venus shines like a jewel.

Jean-Philippe Rameau was born #OTD in 1683, and this certainly counts as one of the most extraordinary performances of his music in recent years. The girl in the gold lamé skirt and boots is none other than Sabine Devieilhe.

"Madame Zilensky and the King of Finland" by Carson McCullers is a rare example of a work of fiction about a woman composer (with twelve symphonies to her name, no less). Are there any others?

One thing I like about these old clips of famous singers is that they accomplish feats of strenuous singing without their faces showing any sign of effort--indeed, without opening their mouths very much. Pons is much better than I remember her from later recordings, but who is this by?

Fascinating. I happen to be reading De Bello Gallico and am greatly enjoying it. It's the sort of book that seems dull when you read only a few excerpts, but turns out to be the exact opposite when you read it from cover to cover, without buying into every outlandish claim.

LECTURE ON NOTHING
I am here
and there is nothing to say
If among you are
those who wish to get somewhere
let them leave at
any moment
What we re-quire
is ; : ;
silence
but what silence requires
is
that I go on talking
Give any one thought
a push
it falls down easily
but the pusher
and the pushed

that enter-
tainment
called
a dis-cussion
Shall we have one later?
TIP
we could simply de-cide
not to have a dis-
What ever you like.
But
there are silences
and the
Or cussion now words silences
make
help make
the
I have nothing to say
and that is
poetry
and I am saying it
as I need it
is organized
This space of time
We need not fear these
silences,

Yesterday was the 49th anniversary of the death of Maria Callas. Here she is coaching mezzo-soprano Sheila Nadler as Amneris. Nadler, who passed away in 2022, was also a notable artist who sang in the 1991 premiere of The Death of Klinghoffer.

If New Mexico changes its name to New America, then maybe New York State should also change its name to New America, and New York City should be known as New America City. The same goes for New Jersey, New Hampshire, and New Orleans. I can see this quickly getting confusing.

In Richard Strauss's Morgen, I have always admired the way the vocal line goes down on the word "niedersteigen," in a charming example of word painting. What I didn't realise was that the bass line simultaneously goes up, adding a mirroring effect.

Every time someone mentions Napoleon III, I think of Babette's Feast -- the original Karen Blixen story -- and the brilliant cook with Communard sympathies who once fed his depraved faux aristocracy at the Café Anglais. There is a reason he died in exile. Let him stay right where he is.

Otd in 1912, Henry Wood conducted the prem of Schoenberg’s Five Pieces for Orchestra at the London Proms. I think it’s fair to say it didn’t go down well. One account reported that a third of the audience hissed, another third laughed, and the remaining third were too baffled to do either. 1/5
