But learning isn’t just information accumulation. It’s social and cultural. It’s identity work and community membership. It’s building relationships with ideas and gaining access to domain specific practices. Stop building educational tools and systems on outdated theories of cognition. 2/2

I'm giving a talk on linguistic dissociation aimed at educators this Thursday, 3:30-4:30 ET. Open to everyone and hybrid. You can register here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
Abstract for the talk: Linguistic dissociation is a process through which people come to distance themselves from
particular linguistic resources in their repertoire because those resources have become
entangled with significant negative interpersonal experiences. Classrooms are powerful
spaces when it comes to shaping how we feel about our languages, so what do educators need
to know about this phenomenon?
In this talk, Dr. Ashley R. Moore will explain what linguistic dissociation is and what we know
about how it is experienced. He will finish by sharing the implications of linguistic dissociation
for teaching and learning, focusing on how it complexifies various plurilingual pedagogies (Lau
& Van Viegen, 2020), including translanguaging pedagogy.

This! Trump wants and compels us—through the manipulation of his language and public/media discourses—to be actively complicit in his agenda. I believe the same point was very well made in Claire Kramsch’s “Language as symbolic power.”
