Does Team-Based Teaching Improve Student Learning? Early Evidence from Arizona – Center on Reinventing Public Education
The traditional American classroom has looked the same for a century: one teacher, one room, one roster. Critics have long argued that this model leaves teachers isolated, overburdened, and with limit...

Our findings are broadly consistent with the literature on departmentalization: as most middle schools are already departmentalized, they realize the benefits of collaboration without (potential) downsides of specialization. Digging further into mechanisms is an important area for future work. (5/6)

Why middle school math? We dig into this a bit with the limited data we have. We find that teaming significantly lowered teacher turnover and increased evaluation ratings. But these impacts spanned grades and subjects, so cannot explain the middle school math effects on their own. (4/6)

Estimates in other grades and subjects are inconsistent and/or violate parallel pre-trends, so we hold back from making causal claims. (3/6)

The most consistent finding is in middle school math, where we find moderately large impacts: teaming increased student achievement by about 0.08 SD. This finding is stable across multiple specifications and robustness checks. (2/6)
Event study figure plotting relative achievement between teamed and non-teamed grades over years since initial implementation using the Borusyak et al estimator. Pre-trends are relatively flat and statistically indistinguishable from zero. After implementation, differences are positive and, for the most part, significant or borderline significant.

So glad to see @matthewakraft.com putting this on the record. I've been disappointed how much of the news cycle has focused on swipe access and surveillance. I always felt safe at Brown, and much of that is because the openness and sense of community. We're all so heartbroken.

Oakland's pilot stands out as a rare, real-world example of effective virtual tutoring at scale. Even at modest doses, students showed measurable gains. Our findings suggest that, when implemented strategically and equitably, virtual tutoring can be a powerful tool for early literacy recovery.

These findings are particularly compelling since tutoring was both virtual and implemented at scale—conditions often associated with diminished effects.

We find promising results: tutored students made larger gains than their peers in foundational reading skills like phonics and accuracy. The differences were meaningful, equivalent to about 1.3 additional months of learning.

Coverage of my new report with Ashley Jochim and Eupha Jeanne Daramola on the implementation and effects of a parent tutoring in Oakland Unified. tl;dr, parent tutors were highly effective--students tutored by parents saw reading gains just as large as those tutored by teachers.
