This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

A6 Hard to answer, but it seems to me it is a continuous process, a build up with time - that is what care and kindness is - being patient and consistent #LFHEchat

The metaphor of entering the room is also interesting. The question is: once in the room, how much effort do you need to put in to prove you are good enough to belong? Or is it the other way around - you are allowed to belong due to past achievements? #LTHEchat

A2 Being included is a box ticking activity - people would do it by obligation and expectatio. Belonging involves a deeper level engagement and lack of friction or anxiety in one's activities in a given environment. Inclusivity comes from outside, belonging comes from you #LTHEchat

A2 Of course there should be adaptations for the local context but to what extent? If they go too far, isn't there a danger of compromising the initial goal of providing students with a degree corresponding to the awarding body standards? #LTHEchat

A2 The key Q is what is the ultimate purpose of TNE? If it is for international students to obtain a UK degree, then should not the standards, methods etc of the awarding institution come to the fore? #LTHEchat 1]

I find it odd that AI has been used for suggesting outlines for academic writing. It is engaging with reading and ideas of others which determines the building of the argument, which in turn reflects on the outline. How can an external agent suggest an outline in this process?!

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

Coming to my classroom is a kind of contract between me and the student and lying to me is a breach of that. It is an unwritten law, an expectation that what I teach is true and what they submit is true to the best of our knowledge.

When it comes to cheating and AI, there are various cases and articles about educators using AI checkers to wrongly accuse students of cheating. Nobody talks about real cases of cheating and how it makes the educator feel

Once physicians began using it, their performance dropped significantly whenever the system was unavailable. During the three-month period before the AI tool was introduced, the specialists found at least one adenoma during 28.4% of colonoscopies. During the three-month period after the tool was introduced, the adenoma detection rate for colonoscopies performed without AI assistance decreased to 22.4%.

A4 I managed to produce a paper off a small scale research I did over the course of two summers (I was on a fixed-term contract and only worked for 3-4 months in the summer). I don't expect to be paid for it because I do it out of curiosity and desire for improving my practice and self. I also prefer to work alone mostly due to my personality I guess. I find it weird to work on a problem I have noticed with someone who hasn't got a clue or is not interested. #LTHEchat

A3 The greatest barrier for me so far has been misalignment between my ideas and strife after doing scholarship, and institutional strategy. I don't work for a research active institution, neither does my role include research. I do it at my own discretion, in my own time #LTHEchat 1]

A2 I usually start from a specific issue I noticed in the classroom, I am then curious to research about it to find a solution or see what others have written about it. If there is a gap in literature, I will be willing to proceed and research deeper so I can contribute and share knowledge #LTHEchat

Some lower level L2 students are doing it to complete assignments even though they are told this is unacceptable. Apparently scholars are doing it too. With AI obliterating language barriers easily, will the idea of academic rigour change?

Universities have now become business entities working with high-paying customers. They (unis) compete for clients' interest and money just like any other business. Cutting out departments and job positions is in line with all of that -if a branch is unprofitable, it is closed.

Yes, teaching the students was part of my original post but had to cut for brevity. It's is based on the assumption students will lag behind in their future career if they are not taught how to use AI.

Possible reasons could be: 1. Fear of falling behind their peers and innovations in their field 2. Desire for career advancement (part of pushing Edtech is rewarding those who adopt it) 3. Pure curiosity and desire to experiment (which in this case I would describe as playing with the devil)

Why are so many educators fervently trying to incorporate AI into their practise? If they can do their job well without it, then it certainly sits very suspicious for me. It is like an acknowledgement they were not so good before and they suddenly discovered AI can help them become better.

I have now seen on two ocassions high profile academics in the field of language and linguistics trying to compare human output against AI output for markers if stance! AI cannot have a stance on a topic, for one, and what is the purpose of this anyway? 🤷‍♀️
