I don’t regret the choice I made, even if the incident also stalled my career. I’m sure many women wonder why more men don’t call out other men, even at the risk of ruining their careers, and… that question sadly answers itself.

Worst part? The woman didn’t defend me. Threw me under the bus. (“You were too harsh!”) Continued to go out for drinks with those men, because one had to be in the “in” crowd to advance one’s career. The rude comments continued. I was no longer invited, and thus not in a position to intervene.

“They should still do what’s right, but in doing so, their ability to influence the group is often cut off.” This was me. During drinks after work, one guy made a lewd comment about a female coworker. I called him on it, and from the next day until the day I left the company, I was ostracized.

Companies usually don’t clean up their own messes unless they are forced to. Corporate contracts (emails and PowerPoint decks) are where the money is. The underlying question is “why aren’t the tech billionaires who build bots altruistic?” and that question practically answers itself.

I'm old enough, now, to have been on both sides of 'previous generation doesn't understand the next generation' and vice versa. Conscious of that, I fought hard to prevent my mind and views from calcifying with age, but looking back at the past couple of decades I see I wasn't immune to that.

It's a much tougher sell for someone like me, living on the West Coast and with a 9-to-5 job, to pack up and travel to DC to protest for weeks or months.

When Koreans protested their corrupt President (Park Geun-Hye) they protested night and day for about 4 months. That was possible in part because over 50% of Korea's population lives in the greater Seoul metropolitan area.

Albania is roughly the size of Maryland. Easier for protesters to get to the protest venue, return home, then return to the protest again, all within a somewhat reasonable timeframe. Sometimes the size of the United States works against it.

Occupy Wall Street taught certain people the wrong lesson: Chip away at it from all sides, arrest protesters, and wait it out until it eventually fizzles.

I'm fortunate that after many years of being single, I eventually found my current girlfriend by sheer luck. (Many years together; will get married soon.) Otherwise I'd be utterly lost and helpless in the current dating scene.

Many of the women around me have been chanting "All men! All men!" And I fully understand why they feel that! Men as a whole have been horrible to women. But when a quick glance at a gym, or asking a woman out for coffee, results in accusations of harassment, it's simply easier to not even try.

The real question is, will GRRM have finished the last novel in A Song of Ice and Fire by then? 🤔

Many say that Blackberry phones had the best keyboards, but Blackberry patented those, and anybody who tries to copy the keyboard's key shapes immediately gets sued. I'm not aware of any company that has licensed it, so either Blackberry refuses to or the fees are prohibitively expensive...

Mind, I'm not so out of shape that my doctor is rushing to prescribe GLP meds. But I used to be fairly slim only 5 years ago. Reaching that shape again would require hours/day spent at the gym or getting close to starving myself.

I was about to say. As one gets older, trying to stay in shape gets much harder for many folks. When I turned 50, it was as if my body's metabolism went off a cliff. And that's with getting my steps in and reducing my portions.

The real world has grown uncomfortably close to the one depicted in Neuromancer. On one hand, the concepts in the story should now be familiar to viewers. On the other hand, I wish our world hadn't taken such a sharp turn for the worse. Dystopian stories are supposed to be warnings, not blueprints!

Blue Ant trilogy, faithfully rendered as a TV series, would rock my world.

I agree. Just saying I wouldn't put it past Trump to try all those things as excuses to either suspend elections or ignore the results. With the GOP-packed Supreme Court, I wouldn't count on 'rule of law' to stop Trump.

National emergency, martial law, elections suspended. I would not put that past Trump. He and his cronies are determined to keep their ill-gotten gains and not go to prison.

I used to live under military juntas in Korea. They were corrupt, and enriched the chaebol, but they built up crucial industries and Korea's economy, and improved Korea's overall standard of living. The only ones in the States with something to show for Trump's corruption are the billionaires.

Don't park your Klanborghini on a NYC street unless you want it to get vandalized.

Whatever power you want for yourself, imagine it in the hands of your opponent. Many think of drone warfare as "save our lives; kill theirs," but their opponents are thinking the exact same thing. Had honestly hoped we wouldn't get the T-800 in our lifetime.

Drones have been used in warfare for some time, but they used to be big and expensive. The war in Ukraine showed the world that cheap drones, cobbled together with off-the-shelf parts, can be effective and deadly. The genie's definitely out. Wish it could've stayed in the bottle a bit longer.

During WW2, the U.S. shifted its vast industry towards weapons. The Allies won the war, but we now have a military-industrial complex. Ukraine absolutely needs to do what they can to repel the invaders. But I wonder what happens to the know-how gained in drone warfare when the conflict ends.

Please let me know which company you work for, so I can tell all my industry contacts to never apply at your workplace. It's just iced coffee. How dare a person hydrate and caffeinate themselves before an interview. Show some compassion.

I walked away from my church because of Christian Nationalists. There are many who claim to subscribe to the Jewish faith who commit acts of cruelty. But there are many Christians and Jews who practice love over hate. I simply ask that we not be so quick to tar *everyone* with the same brush.

Many Jewish friends of mine are appalled that the Netanyahu regime is waging a war of genocide against people in Gaza. We need to not make a blanket assumption that every member of the Jewish faith is a person of hatred.

Some people: "You're different, so we must destroy and ruin you." Most chill folks: "In some ways we're different, but in many ways we're the same. We respect you and love you."

It's also what a failing restaurant chain does to get anti-advertising, because many will refuse to give money to those who cozy up to this administration.

If one even remotely sounds like one is trying to justify/defend the use of AI, people immediately jump to: "Feed him to the Sharkticons." Not saying you were justifying/defending AI. The backlash to AI is so great, most have itchy trigger fingers, and few are interested in nuanced discussions.

My girlfriend uses her credit card and pays it in full each month, but isn’t making any recurring ‘installment’ payments of any kind (car, etc.) aside from her mobile phone bill. Her credit score is 800+. I have no idea if the mobile phone company is reporting her payments to credit bureaus.
000
Martin Thunder @martinthunder.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Yup. I have 4 dormant cards that account for half my total credit. I buy a sandwich now and then to make sure the accounts don't get closed 'due to inactivity.' Those dormant cards increase my total credit. I didn't change my spending habits. I stay frugal, and I pay off balances each month.
010
Martin Thunder @martinthunder.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
When I closed my past car loan, I first made sure I had zero balance on my cards. The hit to my credit score was a mere 15 points.
000
Martin Thunder @martinthunder.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
The hit to your credit score in such situations generally tend to be temporary. As long as you use your credit cards responsibly, and especially if you pay down any balances, your credit score will recover.
100
Martin Thunder @martinthunder.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
That's not 'irresponsible.' But if you happen to have a balance on your cards when the installment loan is closed, it is now counted against 30k total credit, rather than 60k total credit. Which means your utilization percentage has now gone up.
100
Martin Thunder @martinthunder.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Say you have an installment loan for 30k. And your revolving credit lines (cards) are 30k. So your total credit is 60k. Say you've paid off the 30k installment loan, and it is closed. Now your total credit is 30k.
100
Martin Thunder @martinthunder.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Guess what? That's the credit score system in a nutshell. Pay in full each month, the entity (person or bank) who lent you money trusts you fully. Pay the minimum each month, the entity trusts you less.
