Without doubt the best car ad of all times! And based on a true story. With repect to German Reunification Day, one should remember what risk people took to leave the GDR. To put it politely, I find it irritating that nowadays some prefer to follow Putin's rat-catchers. youtu.be/v9iME5dvgAQ?...

For 30.

For the first time in several weeks, there is a certain probability for a westerly flow (NAO+, blue). But the probability for some kind of disturbed flow due to blocking (red), NAO- (green) or an Atlantic ridge (purple) remains much larger. The summer isn't over yet.

...so that surface anomalies near 5°C at the end of the year do not appear completely unimaginable, and huge amounts of heat will be released to the atmosphere. In this case, the 2026/27 El Niño would even be stronger than the "super" El Niño of 1877/78. Credit: cyclonicwx.com.

Time series of daily values of subsurface temperature in the eastern tropical Pacific, starting on 1 May 2026. It shows that the thermocline has lowered by ~50 m, creating an enormous heat source which we can't (yet) see at the surface. Subsurface T anomalies are up to 9°C,...

Left: "traditional" Niño 3.4 SST anomalies since 1 January - much larger than in any other year. Right: "relative Niño index", made by subtracting the mean tropical SST anomaly shows that 2026 is similar to 1997. The coming record temperatures are thus due to global warming. Source: cyclonicwx.com.
"Traditional" Niño 3.4 index (SST anomalies for 5°N-5°S, 120°W-170°W) for selected years. 2026 is clearly warmest."Relative Niño index" for the same region and years. Relative Niño indices are created by taking the mean SST anomaly in the region, subtracting the mean SST anomaly of the 20°N-20°S tropical band, and multiplying by a scaling factor derived from observed SSTs to ensure the resulting value has a similar amplitude to the corresponding traditional Niño index. This index therefore shows the relative El Niño strength without the increased background temperature due to global warming.

The late onset is probably related to the heat waves over large parts of Europe at the end of May and June. These heat waves were related to the so-called Omega blocking circulation anomaly resembling the capital Greek letter Ω. Greenland was "outside" the Ω in rather cold air.

Arguably, the strongest heatwave ever observed in Europe. The map shows maximum temperatures in Denmark on Saturday, 27 June 2026. New all-time records in Ødum and Odense (37.0°C), shattering the old June record (35.5°C, 1947) as well as the old all-time record (36.4°C, 1975). Map: meteorolog.dk.

A tropical night (minimum temperature above 20°C) rarely occurs at low altitude stations in central Europe, but for Sněžka / Śnieżka (Schneekoppe), at 1603 m the highest mountain in the Sudetes on the border between Poland and the Czech Republic, it is truly extreme! Forecast by the German model.

Animated forecast from @ecmwf.int showing 500 hPa geopotential anomalies for the next 15 days. Very stable Ω blocking over central Europe with "cold feet" west and east of it. For large parts of Europe this means a strong heat wave over the next two weeks.

The onset of the melting season in Greenland is defined as the first of at least three days in a row with melting over more than 5% of the Greenland Ice Sheet. The median over the period 1981-2026 is on 27 May. This year, the melting onset was 9 days late, on 5 June, which is the fifth latest.

Today 177 years ago Denmark got a democratic constitution. Please, all, remember that we have something worth to defend! Now more than ever. Side note: arguably, Germans don't have many things to be proud of. I NEVER understood why Constitution Day is not a public holiday in Germany.
