What about positive interventions? Any initiative to create a better information ecosystem needs to focus first on how to encourage and enable good, accurate, independent news and reporting, rather than clamping down on the bad #infodefence (6/6)

Will it do more than whack-a-mole? If the purpose of the centre is to ‘detect, attribute and disrupt… information attacks’ then it risks not addressing the systemic problems and opening the government up to accusations of political censorship and propaganda #infodefence (5/6)

Is it because of AI? There are plenty of problems with the digital information environment, which are evolving rapidly due to AI, though this was presented as a multiplication of the threat, not an evolution #infodefence (4/6)

Why now? It also feels oddly anachronistic, more like a 2020 initiative than one for 2026. And it would be great to know where the £1.3bn figure came from (that he said the Kremlin spends per year on manipulating information) #infodefence (3/6)

What sparked this? It seems to have come out of the blue, unprompted by evidence of specific new threats (like Brexit, 2019, COVID, or Southport) #infodefence (2/6)

Orban's historic defeat ought to force us to reflect on (amongst other things) the relationship between media and politics. Fidesz' control of the media was structural and systemic - everything from local papers to radio news to billboard advertizing. It still didn't work. #dictatingreality

Content is only part of the reason why the BBC is losing the young – as important are the BBC’s structural disadvantages within the existing digital ecosystem and the way in which our individualized media consumption prioritizes private over public interest

Young people consume most of their media via their phone (on which they spend 4.5+ hours a day), with less than half of 16-24 yr olds even switching on broadcast TV in the average week (Ofcom 2024)

When they’re thinking about what to watch young people are more likely to turn to YouTube, TikTok, or Disney+ than the BBC (BBC is 5th most watched streaming service among 16-24s)

Can Google still justify crawling all online content by fair use and value-added if, rather than providing snippets to promote click-through, it gives people an AI-generated summary? And doesn't the publication of the summary turn it into a publisher (with associated liabilities)?
