With some delay, my op-Ed on the dramatic Saxony-Anhalt election. It is high time we focus our political struggle on strengthening democracy, rather than merely weakening the far right. To do this, we must show realism, resilience and restraint.

My second APSA was rewarding, the feedback was excellent again! A special thank you to my discussant @jongreen.bsky.social. I am looking forward to ECPR 2026 tomorrow in Krakow, where I will present on two panels: Epistemic Governance in Higher Education, and U.S. Foreign Policy in Turmoil.

There is a very unfortunate consequence of temporal semantic drift in the case of shirts with the phrase “Je Suis Charlie” in Black text on a white T shirt. There is no way anyone in the West under the age of 24 will not think of Charlie Kirk

Is Brexit to blame for the churn of Prime Ministers? | LSE British Politics
After Keir Starmer announced he will be resigning, the UK is about to have its seventh PM since the Brexit referendum, ten years ago. That's not a coincidence.

Most constitutions are quite inflexible on democracy; ours is more of a strongly worded vibe check. It's been here for 177 years because a) it's hard and we can't be bothered, b) the Crown hasn't been acting up lately

Most of the checks and balances in our constitution are on the monarchic rule, not on the role of the state against its citizens. So, supposing our King would like to sell Greenland to Trump, he would have to gain the approval of parliament §19.

Martin Dybdahl @martindyb.bsky.social · 05/06/2026
This is a well-known contradiction between the two laws. Here, §1 of the constitution concerns the Kingdom, the realm of which Greenland remains within. But the 2009 self-rule act recognizes Greenlanders' right to self-determination and a route to independence.

Greenland has completely restructured its relationship with Denmark since 1953, yet it remains governed by this constitution, which mostly concerns the King and the Church, and not so much equal rights or democratic representation.

Martin Dybdahl @martindyb.bsky.social · 05/06/2026
Changing the constitution is politically infeasible, so no one will take the first step, causing a problem for the hope of equality and justice for Greenland. Today, Inuit Ataqatigiit has invited some experts on how to address these issues within the framework of the constitution.

Our 1953 revisions that are supposedly ensuring our democratic rights, according to many. Barely protects any of these rights. Most of these are outsourced to the European Convention, and our government is also openly passing immigration laws that it admits are in conflict with the European Court.

And 2026 proved the King has no real say: the role bounced around every time our little Kingmaker Løkke moved his 14 seats. The Crown rubber-stamps the math at each step. Social convention is doing the work that the text never describes.

Martin Dybdahl @martindyb.bsky.social · 05/06/2026
Case in point: Kongerunde: the King names a royal appointee, Mette Frederiksen, to try to build a government. Looks royal. Isn't. He's just ratifying where the seats point, and none of this is even in the Constitution.

Happy 🇩🇰 Constitution Day, a short🧵 on what makes the Danish constitutional monarchy weird. De jure, Denmark is not really democratic. The King is "the highest authority over all the affairs of the realm" (§12), the co-holder of legislative power (§3), and law passes without his assent (§22).

🇩🇰Election results: The parties in Mette Frederiksen’s centrist coalition government lost seats in the Danish elections - yet, Denmark could still end up with a centrist coalition as no clear governing coalition emerges on the left or the right Coalition talks will now commence

Danish media certainly seems to think so! Especially when the right wing parties right out the gate are discussing quantities of “Muslim immigrants” citat Messerschmidt - I’ll be generous and say it’s about more than that, and I hope it will be for S.

With a Greenland that is more confident in its path to self-determination. Trump has managed to cool Danish-American relations while inadvertently warming Danish-Greenlandic ties.

Yet we can affirm that while perhaps the US does not want Greenland, Trump wants Greenland. Except what he has recieved for the moment is a Denmark that is more invested in its Arctic territory than ever, and more reconciliatory towards its colonial past than ever.

In 2025, an American president is attempting something similar and discovering that Greenland now has the agency, and Denmark the political will, to say no. In 2021, Secretary of State Antony Blinken had explicitly confirmed that the US was "no longer interested in purchasing Greenland."

Martin Dybdahl @martindyb.bsky.social · 24/12/2025
The historical irony is considerable. In 1941, the United States occupied Greenland while Denmark was under Nazi control, treating the island as a strategic asset to be managed between great powers.

Martin Dybdahl @martindyb.bsky.social · 24/12/2025
Denmark and Greenland are issuing joint statements. European allies are conducting Arctic military exercises in Greenlandic territory. And polling suggests that 85% of the island's population opposes the acquisition that Trump insists is essential.

As far as I can understand, the funding behind "Patriot Polling" is not disclosed anywhere. They didn't provide any way of certifying that the phone numbers they had belonged to Greenlanders, only that they received 416 responses from +299 phone numbers.

The University of California is actively cooperating with the government witch hunt against some 850 faculty members. cucfa.org/2025/04/cucf...
At the University of California, the Office of the President (UCOP) disclosed last week the personal and demographic information of over 850 UC faculty members after being subpoenaed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) as part of its investigation of antisemitism at UC campuses. The faculty who received these notices from UCOP were signatories of two letters addressed to university leadership. The first was an open letter to the UC Berkeley community expressing concern about “recent events in Israel and Gaza.” The second was a separate, multi-campus petition to the Regents accusing UC administrators of fomenting antisemitic hostilities toward Jewish faculty and students by not cracking down on pro-Palestinian protests.

Dear anyone on Bsky, has anyone done any research into "Patriot Polling"? I find it odd that their first-ever survey outside of the US was in Greenland and that this survey reaches conclusions opposite to the Danish and Greenlandic polls and the March election results.

The Vibes Are Off: Did Elon Musk Push Academics Off Twitter? By James Bisbee, Vanderbilt University and Kevin Munger, European University Institute Twitter has been a prominent forum for academics communicating online, both among themselves and with policy makers and the broader public. Elon Musk’s takeover of the company brought sweeping changes to many aspects of the platform, including public access to its data; Twitter’s approach to censorship and mis/disinformation; and tweaks to the affordances of the platform.
