Speaking as someone who is very anxious to pronounce Latin according to the rules set down by ancient grammarians ... the traditional English pronunciation of Latin is so cool and good and should never have been abandoned* (*it should be taught alongside a reconstructed classical pronunciation)

Just read this short book on philosopher Louis Althusser's murder of his wife, & it's of a piece with all I've read about Nazi intellectuals who had a career after the war: all who still want to like him represent it as some great mystery, when he was simply a chauvinist pig who committed femicide.
Book cover "Killer Althusser. The Banality of Men" by Francis Dupuis-Déri, translated by Mélissa Bull, published by Provocations. There's a line drawing on the cover too, I think it's a combination of the Mars/male symbol and a deflating penis?

Even the people who wrote the books, wrote in them! Here's a 14th-century manuscript where the scribe wrote at the bottom: "May the writer be healthy."
AM 286 fol., f. 7v (1310-1330). A manuscript from Denmark. On this page, one scribe stops writing and another takes up writing. The second scribe has written a Latin phrase in the bottom margin.

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

"wordy, old prose" - this is such a horrible and ubiquitous way to think of older literature. every period of (even just) English-language writing has forms of expression nobody before or since would have thought of, but people treat it as an imposition that it's not all flat dull 21st century prose

I've been working on and off on a list of pagan hymns, including Neo-Latin + vernacular pieces, and I noticed today (while adding Bernardo Tasso's odes) that I hadn't covered Italian at all so far! Can people point me to Italian poets who've written hymns and odes to pagan gods? There must be many.

I don't know what was in Nolan's head obviously, but movie Athena behaves lot more like a deity (if not like the poem's Athena) than she does a "PTSD vision". She appears at various moments to tell Odysseus true things he doesn't (want to) know. Only in his mind? Well, that's where Athena acts.

I saw The Odyssey and read Emily Wilson's review today, and while I disagree with a lot of what she says, the way I've seen people represent her on here is just awful. There's nothing mean-spirited or politically regressive about the review, and you can just disagree with it without pretending so.

That's true, but the e.g. of Melos comes to mind because we have Thucydides' Melian dialogue, a critique of Athenian politics BY an Athenian. These writers often disavow the harsher critiques they (nevertheless) put in their works, but they were not simply speaking in the name of the most powerful!

It is a false distinction to see the atrocious attack in Berlin as something unique or exceptional. It is wrong to claim that it is an "attack on our free societies". It is a continuation of the practices of these societies. Only if we overcome these practices can we actually be safe.

Weird how none of the Odyssey discourse is about this
The Odyssey is the first major Hollywood production to shoot scenes in Western Sahara. This would have been unthinkable prior to 2020 when Donald Trump broke with decades of US foreign policy and recognized Morocco's illegally established sovereignty over the territory. The decision was part of a quid pro quo in exchange for Morocco's normalization of ties with Israel. Now Nolan and crew's four day shoot in Dakhla illustrates how quickly Hollywood have moved to exploit the opportunities created by Trump's transactional diplomacy.

This is, in fact, an imperalist logic: that English speech can encompass any word from any language, all cultural space. The post itself shows this doesn't work: English speakers don't know how to type umlauts (it's Türkiye), they also don't know how to pronounce them (they still say Turkey-eh).

People who think this: Do you really think the rest of the world refers to other countries by their autonyms? That non-English speaking countries use the words "England" or "United Kingdom"? Or are you suggesting they're all uncivilised for it but that you expect this country to rise above the norm?

The rest of this thread is great but depicting God as Zeus is absolutely not what poisoned the imaginary. People in the Renaissance who cared about Zeus knew that his iconography is symbolic and the deity is non-gendered. Why are we putting the ignorance of modern Christians on paganism/humanism?

Exactly as you can make a compound noun from "riot" and "goblin" in English - to wit, "riot goblin" - so you can make a compound noun from "Randale" and "Kobold". That does not make it "a German word" in the sense that anyone knows or uses it.
