Friday morning, I was gardening when I checked my phone. A request had gone out for help. For 25+ hours, ICE had been laying siege to a quiet neighborhood in Frederick, MD. Community members were afraid, some didn’t want to leave their homes. ICE vehicles seemed to be lurking on every corner.

ICE vehicle - black Nissan Maxima with plate cover - posted up in a spot that also serves as an elementary school bus stop.

Another ICE vehicle, black Dodge Durango, lurking around the community.

Two more ICE vehicles - black Dodge Durango and a white SUV, unclear on make, model - on a quiet residential street, being quietly creepy. Note that the white SUV has its plate covered.

Yet another ICE vehicle. Black Nissan Pathfinder. They were all over the neighborhood.

This is absolutely true. I think scientific societies are moving in the right direction (i.e. automatic delays in ESI status for having a child) but we can do more. Including standard paternity leave!

Let me post a spicy take here: most people don't read or cite other model organisms' work. Because of this, they keep rediscovering things and, most importantly, re-writing the timeline in favor of fewer and fewer models. That, plus an artificial limit of citations per paper equals this 🧪

I hope there is an ACLU class action lawsuit on behalf of the hundreds of US citizens and others with legal papers being unlawfully detained and incarcerated. If ICE operations become a financial liability to the government, it might exert pressure to stop this insanity.

This is a reasonable idea. We have university library staff who help researchers with all sorts of things related to refs and data, this might make some sense (and maybe they could get their student workers to help).

Yeah, I realize this is a tough ask on editors. But it also should not fall to reviewers. So the dilemma is, who will fact check the AI? If it ends up being on reviewers, they need to pay us. :) Sorry this happened to you; its quite alarming.
