Academic, art historian, obsessed with Scotland, gardening, and books. Spends far too much time in anatomical museums. Will eat cake.

Just finished Andrea Korda's article "Object Lessons in Victorian Education: Text, Object, Image". I stayed an extra two hours at my desk to finish it - it was that good. Excited to use it (alongside our Materials Collection) for teaching Art & Empire!

Finally brewing a cup of the Apfel-Feige (Apple-Fig) tea I bought last summer in Berlin. Still convinced grocery store "souvenirs" are the best souvenirs.

Visited this museum a few years ago. Goth child and I particularly appreciated this hearse and the undertaker's workshop (although the witch's hut was my favorite)! The story here is also interesting, as the cost of funerals continues to be a burden on many families.

Just finished reading this last week and was struck by how powerfully convincing and original it was - absolutely immerses you in working-class Glasgow of the 1970s, through the eyes of a young girl. A very good read!

A bunch of native plants & a pond bring all the birds to the yard (even in the city!). Today: Song Sparrow, American goldfinch, Northern Flicker, Dark-Eyed Junco, Yellow-Rumped Warbler, Hairy Woodpecker, Cardinal, House Sparrow, American Robin, Gray Catbird, & Blue Jay. I love migration season!

Wait, WHAT? "In the realm of aesthetics, a similar contradiction arose in the art and life of William Morris, socialist activist and famed wallpaper designer, whose business was built on wealth from Devin Great Consols, a copper mine turned world’s largest arsenic refinery." How did I not know this?

Well, that seems inevitable. Got a notice that our native grasses are overhanging the alley, and I'm guessing it's because grass=weeds in many people's minds. (The grasses in question are side oats, prairie dropseed, and the like.) I will trim them back, but do I also need a "native plants" sign...?

Deep in the weeds with this chapter on the French anatomical modeler Louis-Thomas-Jérôme Auzoux. For some reason my brain decided that we needed to tell the *entire* story of his career and legacy in a single book chapter, so what we may have here is an editing problem in the making. Hmm.

When I am in writing mode, I often schedule in some "breaks" to rest my mind. Today's "break" is sorting my tights. What does it say about me that I can schedule an entire activity around sorting my (multi-hued) tights? Child of the '80s? Lives in a cold climate? Unrepentant collector of all things?
