Academic, art historian, obsessed with Scotland, gardening, and books. Spends far too much time in anatomical museums. Will eat cake.

Wait, Strawberry Hill is still standing? I would have thought it was a ramshackle ruin by now....!

It was a cool idea, but honestly I am getting so tired of the illusion cakes. There are so many beautiful pastries in the world - I'd be happy to never see fondant again.

The French Student Protesters’ Demands Are Extremely Clear
A growing movement has mobilized France’s youth against diminished school conditions and accumulating problems—and provided, for its detractors, a pretext for blaming the country’s ills on febrile ado...

This was aeons ago, but it seemed that a lot of the bus stations in Quebec City were at least partly enclosed (glass), and I think one or two might have been heated? And yes, I agree on the frequency front!

Is she under the mistaken impression that one can *see* cyclospora? (I will say, though, that I once got food poisoning from the hot bar at Whole Foods. But I mean, gonna happen sooner or later no matter where you are.)

That is really, really gonna suck when winter comes. I lived in Québec for a year (long ago), and can I just say? Mpls needs to upgrade its bus stops to reflect the fact that standing outside in negative temps is really painful. I hope someone can save one of these programs...

Today it occurred to me that the advent of "Dark Academia" as a nostalgic, heavily romanticized vision of an academic world that never really existed was... probably a bad sign for present-day Academia.

Here's the thing... sometimes multiple people (like, a family) use the same account. So mine is not as accurate, LOL.

I have found that the trick there is just to eat a lot of beans - and put massive amounts of cheese on top. Voilà! Your cheese has fiber. ;)

Heaven help me, I have seen - in person - *two* of the kits used for doing this, in the past 3 months. Thankfully, they were not in use at the time, but I did enjoy the spirited debate among history of medicine scholars as to whether this would be effective (verdict: potentially).

Could you point me towards a recipe for the whole wheat rolls? I've started baking bread again and am in search of more tasty whole wheat recipes, because otherwise I just eat way too much white bread toast!

Just finished Andrea Korda's article "Object Lessons in Victorian Education: Text, Object, Image". I stayed an extra two hours at my desk to finish it - it was that good. Excited to use it (alongside our Materials Collection) for teaching Art & Empire!

Do you ever see those ads for someone who wants to move to a remote Scottish island and (take care of a lighthouse/watch over the wildlife/monitor the shoreline, etc.)? Every time I see one, my whole body goes, "Yes.........................." Unfortunately, I have too many books to ship that far.

So, a while back I went to a conference in Miami. On the way home, I went to check in. The counter was empty. My flight didn't appear on the board. Turned out my airline (Skybus) had gone bankrupt. When their employees found out, they (rightly) all just packed up and left. Had to buy a new ticket.

Is the new season out?! Oh, I'll have to check if it's airing here. I much prefer both UK versions to the US version (too many reality tv stars in the latter).

Visited this museum a few years ago. Goth child and I particularly appreciated this hearse and the undertaker's workshop (although the witch's hut was my favorite)! The story here is also interesting, as the cost of funerals continues to be a burden on many families.

I know someone who had adrenal hyperplasia, had the surgery (at Mayo?) a decade or more ago, said they felt *much* better afterwards, and they're completely fine now. I'm not sure if that's useful, but for what it's worth.

Did you know that they tortured her - using thumb screws (terribly ironic given her profession as a painter) - to make sure her testimony was 'accurate'? (This was apparently relatively common practice at the time.)

Just finished reading this last week and was struck by how powerfully convincing and original it was - absolutely immerses you in working-class Glasgow of the 1970s, through the eyes of a young girl. A very good read!

I can't tell you how many people I've met on my travels over the last two years - in France, the UK, Germany, etc. who told me that they had canceled their plans to visit the US. People who just love Las Vegas, people whose partner's family lives here, even people who are American citizen expats...

I was so happy on my summer research trip (to the UK and Denmark) - I took a lot of trains and spent each trip just looking out the window. I miss that deep reflection time when I am back stateside. I would have to intentionally plan for it, which becomes just another cognitive burden...

It's like a *bird highway* out there: since my last post, Canada geese have flown over, and Purple Finch, American Crow, White-breasted Nuthatch, Black-capped Chickadee have all visited the yard. (Side note: Lest anyone think I am amazing at bird-watching, I am in fact using Merlin.)

Oh wow! Another 10 minutes, and I've added: Brown Creeper, House Finch, and White-Throated Sparrow. It's wild out there today! Also possibly an American herring gull (because of the Mississippi River, we sometimes get seagulls in the city).

A bunch of native plants & a pond bring all the birds to the yard (even in the city!). Today: Song Sparrow, American goldfinch, Northern Flicker, Dark-Eyed Junco, Yellow-Rumped Warbler, Hairy Woodpecker, Cardinal, House Sparrow, American Robin, Gray Catbird, & Blue Jay. I love migration season!
