Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 04/09/2026This season hasn't generally worked for me. Increasingly not a fan of the "pick a conceit, throw every cliché against the wall and see what sticks, then add plot" (harsh, I know!). But always enjoy the Ups & Downs, even when I disagree (like this week). It's good to know others are enjoying it. 000

Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 27/08/2026Possibly my favourite this season so far (not a high bar, but cleared it easily). Bit of a silly magic science resolution, but they'd earned a bit of forgiveness by that point. 030
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 11/08/2026They’re probably still trying to find an eclipse denier to explain why the astronomers are wrong. 071
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 11/08/2026* sense of achievement. Grrr. Needed another draft... 040
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 11/08/2026Besides anything else, you're missing out on the ease of achievement you get from completing something. Yes, you've published a book, but it's not yours. You've added no value. Right. Time to get on with my third draft. You have to go through the pain to get the reward! 120
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 08/08/2026Personal thing. Enjoy horror in small doses but get rapidly bored when that's all there is (character stuff was okay). First episode better, but was such an SF cliché, even when I read the same past solar system story back in the 70s! Nothing bad, just not to my taste. 100
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 07/08/2026Having struggled with first two eps this season, when this started, I imagined it would get irritating very quickly. It walked that line for a few minutes... and then I realised I was enjoying it! Possibly just the mood I was in, but was what i needed yesterday. Silly fun. 100
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 01/08/2026Have any Tory MPs come out in support of Gianni Infantino? They'd have the right political instincts to cement Kemi's legacy. 010
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 31/07/2026I've realised over the years that I enjoy horror in moderation – the odd scene for effect etc. When it goes on for long, I get bored rather than scared. So I hung on for the character work, intrigued as to what it was. Leaving it to Space Mulder was a cop out for my taste. One to skip on rewatch. 010
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 24/07/2026Oh, and: Pelia rushes in at the end: "Quick, we can still save Adric." 030
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 24/07/2026A lot to like, some good scenes and performances, but let down by what was a tired trope (for me). I'm sure I read a pulp SF story in the 1970s with exactly the same planet 5/asteroid resolution (and it was tired then). Still, agree with most of your other points! 110
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 22/07/2026I needed to hear that today! Currently staring at the hundreds of feedback comments on my second draft. They're annoyingly astute. Right. Time to get carving. 020

If you spend *ANY MONEY** or attention on anything JK Rowling related you are quite literally funding the machinations of someone who is in my considered opinion evil. She’s directly funding hate groups. It’s not hard. & there are much better books about teenage magicians out there 08731
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 14/07/2026Ah, bit more fundamental! Mine just didn’t show the ball when it was moving! Have had it crash, but not more than a couple of times a match. Iplayer much more stable. Then again, ITVX might be perfect for watching the half time show during the final… 000
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 14/07/2026Similar here at start - had ball phasing in and out of existence on ITVX, but not iPlayer. Turns out my TV’s “motion smoothing” option had turned itself back on, which screwed ITVX. Just about bearable with it off. IPlayer much better picture quality anyway! 100

Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 12/07/2026Get the feeling that a lot of In Depth stories lately stem from something someone read in the Spectator that falls apart when they investigate but frame the story that way anyway. 170
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 07/07/2026I do have one memory of the '66 final as a 5-year-old. I was taken to a village fete, presumably to get me out of the way, and they gave score updates over the tannoy. I can still remember the groans when they announced West Germany's equaliser to take it into extra time. Sticks in the mind. 010
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 07/07/2026You know, I think you're right. My first world cup experience after getting interested in football as a kid was going into the tournament as champions, then going 2-0 up agains West Germany. Then, well, I learned the heartbreak. Watching Brazil in the final cemented the addiction. 110
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 01/07/2026Mine was 1970, when we went 2-0 up against West Germany. I should have gone to bed then. (As a 5 year old, I was taken to a village fete in 1966, presumably to get me out of the way) 010
Mark W White @markwhitebooks.com · 28/06/2026Quick, he needs to rescind his retirement while Atkinson is bowling, then retire again at the start of his next over. Do it a couple of times. Get the last 2 wickets. 000
