1/4 Sunday morning rant. The 100-point grading scale so widely used in the US is irrational and ridiculously unfair. Why in the world should a student who gets one A (100) and one F (0) get an overall grade of F (50)?

Reminder for the new semester that you can’t detect AI Researchers secretly added AI-created papers to the exam pool: “We found that 94% of our AI submissions were undetected. The grades awarded to our AI submissions were on average half a grade boundary higher than that achieved by real students”

Key point that isn't widely understood: Yes, LLMs are statistical models, but they do more than parrot. They apply "reasoning patterns" to produce text that says things humans may not have said before. Sometimes this results in useful insight. mikecaulfield.substack.com/p/critical-r...
