With the recent death of the universally beloved Dolly Parton, the last thing that unites the overwhelming majority of Americans across all political, cultural, religious, and racial divides is how we all come together in October to root against the Yankees and Dodgers.

Even if I didn't write the liner notes for this release (which, in fact, I did), I would highly recommend it to anyone. Fantastic recording.

Great article. I'm usually immediately cynical about claims like "lost masterpiece" or hyperbolic "missing link" or "Holy Grail" labels. But Mark Stryker makes a really good case for why the Tiberi Tapes are worth the hype. It seems like there is some legit new aspects of Trane to hear.

Delighted to share the new review above of my book, "Jazz from Detroit," penned by the British writer, musician & record executive Matt Phillips. I wasn't expecting the paperback version of the book, published earlier this year by @uofmpress.bsky.social to generate fresh reviews but here we are!

FYI -- the recording was discovered by Seattle saxophonist and writer Steve Griggs -- a dear friend of mine from college -- who was close to Brazil's family and cataloging Joe's archive when he came across the tape. Joe and Steve (and, of course Trane) are the heroes of the story.

Happy birthday to Branford Marsalis, who turns 66 today. That means that I am now age ... oh, fuck. I first interviewed him in spring 1992 when I was working for The South Bend Tribune and he was six weeks away from starting The Tonight Show. This excerpt captures something fundamental.

It's Dolly's song, and it reveals how much was there right from the get-go -- it's proud, confident, slyly self-aware, and self-deprecating all at once. And the voice is unmistakable. 2/2 www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxPb...

For Dolly, R.I.P. There was only one of those. I wouldn't necessarily call the title track from her second solo LP, Just Because I'm a Woman," a feminist anthem, but for country music in 1968 when it hit the airwaves? Yeah, it raised eyebrows, and I'm sure women heard her loud and clear. 1/2
