The Litmus Test: The NoNamers Talk John Boorman's Excalibur (1981)

That inspired us to gather a few folks (including a returning David R.) to discuss the ins and outs of EXCALIBUR, how it's held up, and where it fits or doesn't fit into Arthurian mythology. Here's a link to the Apple Podcast (also available on Spotify): podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t... Enjoy!

A while back I was on a podcast with David Rodriguez @rodriguezwrites.bsky.social (at Blizzard Entertainment) and he mentioned the curious fact that so many people who work in comics, fantasy lit, and gaming know John Boorman's 1981 film EXCALIBUR, with a host of then-unknown-and-now-famous actors.

Forgive me but that looks like a typo, the playbook appears to say “Goatmather”? (Hard to tell with the font)

I’m not sure what’s been officially announced yet but I may or may not have done some art for the new edition and may or may not have helped Neil Gibson with the box cover layout.

There may or may not be a new WB&RM edition on the way so if you don’t take Brian up on his offer of a swap then that might point to waiting on punching that unpunched Dragon Pass…

NEW from me: Over the last 4 years, America has lost more than 200k jobs in creative fields like publishing, film, TV, or graphic design. It's the worst stretch for arts jobs outside of recessions. How much is AI to blame? And can the arts' business model survive?🧵 www.apricitas.io/p/ai-and-the...

Google finally updated some of its satellite images of Gaza and my god, it's horrific. The entirety of Rafah has been demolished. The majority of Khan Younis is in ruins. Entire towns completely leveled and erased of the map.

I've set up a new website / blog as a space for discussion, history, research, and discourse, for Greg Stafford's world of Glorantha, and the games and fiction that are set there. First "proper" post coming soon, will be a celebration of Prince Snodal, Glorantha's first hero. gloranthology.org

Very funny but also a bit predictable that they felt the need to specify “True Detective (Season 1)”.

I've been working on this for the last few months and I'm really happy now it's finally available: tiny.cc/jc-jv Jonstown Voices is a collection of 60 "What My Elder Told Me" style pieces for RuneQuest / Glorantha, to celebrate 60 years since Greg Stafford first discovered the setting.

To go from “you’re on a personal revenge trip” to “‘my dad was the *real* hero” combined with making Joe Morton play a heel and potentially setting up the end of M’Benga’s time on the show? Yeah pretty atrocious writing.

By odd coincidence I have the same book (I’m not sure if I have a clear idea on how common they were). Always a bit amusing to read late 19th century medical books with recipes that call for cocaine.

My PoD from Drivethru arrived. I lost track of how long it took. About 10 days? That's about normal if I understand correctly. Anyway I've been a fan of Mark's for years and was delighted when he started illustrating Glorantha, so this was an easy buy. I'd love a Katrin Dirim one too.

I saw Clue in theaters when it came out and lucked out with the third ending; my friends and I compared notes with people coming out of other screenings and they mostly seemed dissatisfied. When it finally hit home video I was shocked the other endings were released independently, they’re so short.

Mark Smylie @marksmylie.bsky.social · 12/08/2026

I just checked and in the pdf the map is broken up across the different Gazetteer sections. (The physical book has the map as a tip-in). But if you got the pdf from Chaosium or DriveThru then you should have gotten links to two versions of the map (low and high res) and the road map as separate PDFs

Mark Smylie @marksmylie.bsky.social · 12/08/2026

If you don’t have it yet Lands of RuneQuest: Dragon Pass has a very nice, very legible, and very detailed map of the Dragon Pass region (including most of Tarsh but not Prax), and of course the book is also a Gazetteer.

Trump voters love Trump because he tells them explicitly that the system has failed, and makes it okay to be a criminal. It's why evidence of his many crimes doesn't dissuade them. His crimes are why they vote for him. His crimes make their crimes permissible.

415544

Anyway I think about that when I think about Trump voters. We all implicitly understand that the system has failed and that it's all bullshit. Some people are pretending, like the party apparatchiks in Poland, that the system still works the way it's supposed to. But most people don't believe them.

If you could take bribes, you took bribes. You traded ration cards, sold yourself, smuggled stuff from the West if you could. Her grandparents made moonshine in their apartment and sold it to their neighbors. Nobody believed what the system told them. Everyone was, effectively, a criminal.
