It's easy to misidentify when the field marks are obscured by darkness and/or the birders own fatigue and under-caffeination. I would not chalk it up to any lack in the robustness of the male specimen :)

Sanderlings and black-bellied plovers—party, often, to the best sunsets in the world. And I could swear that while they're working hard part of the time, they also pause, like us, just to be thrilled with it all. 🪶

As if the sea and sanderlings were not enough, the Pixies (!!) were performing at the Ohana Festival a mile up the beach, and they played "Where Is My Mind?" as the sun set and the sky and water and shore all turned to rose fire 🪶
