Possibly lifetime best student review of a class I taught.
I actually came into my undergraduate with the intent of being a mechanical engineering major. I found after a bit of time that that wasn’t my passion. It wasn’t something that I was super interested in, wasn’t interested in doing for the rest of my career. But it was something that I thought that I kind of needed to do in order to be an astronaut or to keep the door open for becoming an astronaut. It was really kind of at that crossroads where there were a couple of really interesting courses with titles like, ‘What Makes a Habitable Planet,’ ‘Planetary Materials.’ And I looked up and I said, ‘Whatever that is, that’s what I want to do.’ That was in the geology department. And so I signed up for my first geology class. And it was love at first class. From then on that passion just grew, as I continued in my career.

Good luck to Jessica Watkins on her ride up to the space station this morning. I still have her final project ppt on my laptop from when she took the "What Makes a Habitable Planet?" course I co-taught at Stanford with Jack Lissauer.

From yesterday, Planetary Geosciences undergraduate Dora Elalaoui-Pinedo explains her working making digital terrain models to NASA Administrator Isaacman. Dora is one of the first 10 or so majors in our new program that started a few years ago.

Enjoyed meeting NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman today as he heard about a few of our missions and met some of our amazing undergrads and grads who make it all possible.

LPL's Catalina Sky Survey @catalinaskysurvey.bsky.social discovered a small asteroid shortly before it impacted Australia yesterday.
A small natural object 1.5-5 feet (0.5-1.5m) is predicted to impact Earth’s atmosphere just northwest of Australia and safely disintegrate today, Sept. 6, 12:14 p.m. EDT. While not a hazard, scenarios like this provide an invaluable test of our planetary defense capabilities to monitor for larger objects and predict impact threats. The object was first reported to the Minor Planet Center by the Catalina Sky Survey, with earlier detections by Pan-STARRS, and the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies @NASAJPL calculated its trajectory and impact location - all funded by NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office.

This is only the 13th small object that has been detected in space prior to impact, most from @NASA’s routine planetary defense monitoring.

We lock eyes and he looks at me like, what are you going to do about it? I did my best Steve Irwin and said it’s all yours. It’s not a problem. He gave me a serious look and then jumped down outside the fence. The camera caught him a few seconds later.

Someone wanted to look up the exoplanets DRM for JWST to see where they got the exoplanets models from. I wish I could say I could remember doing this.

When you see something suspicious under a couch around here half the time it is a rubber band or other debris. A third of the time it is a dead scorpion and the rest of the time it’s a live one. Today was a dead one.

It’s funny that I’ve had this for a couple of years and it’s just these particular javelina that are vandals. Next step will be to try your method. I did set up a backup inside the fence while I’m away and the bobcats found it.

I broadly agree with you however will point out that Lodders (e.g., Lodders 1999, figure below) has always said you get both MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4. Early models tended to pick one species for simplicity. The alkali clouds form at T's below around 900K.
