It started out as Patrick Kane's night. It became Artyom Levshunov's night. "I know I can do this, I just have to do this." Observations from last night's Blackhawks home-opener, from @scottpowers.bsky.social and me: www.nytimes.com/athletic/766...

Blackhawks fans got a glimpse of past, present and future in Chicago's first win of the season.

Trippy seeing Patrick Kane III — "Trick" — bounding down the hallway outside the locker room. I'm old enough to remember when Duncan Keith's kid was that young, darting around the visitors room in Vancouver telling all the Blackhawks his favorite player was... Patrick Kane.

FINAL: Blackhawks were hanging on by the skin of their teeth for most of the third period, but hold off the Blues for their first win of the season, 3-2. The Levshunov-to-Frondell beauty ends up not being the GWG, but it was the big one.

Roman Kantserov gets called for tripping in the offensive zone with 2:23 left. Blues still looking for the equalizer.

Levshunov's been really good tonight. Reminds me of the game he had against the Islanders last year, when he wanted to prove Schaefer wasn't the only young star defenseman out there. He's got size, strength, skill. Just needs to learn and put it all together.

Mark Lazerus @marklazerus.bsky.social · 13h
He's 20, folks. Far be it from me to defend someone I cover, but jeez. Give him a minute.

GOAL: Frondell from Levshunov. What a play by Levshunov to make that happen. 2-1 Blackhawks.

GOAL: Sam Rinzel pops in a Nazar rebound as the power play expires. 1-1. Donato had the firstr crack at the rebound but missed, and Rinzel crashed and scored.

And five minutes into the second period of the home opener in which Patrick Kane returned, we have boos. This power play has been ugly.

Also it was Connor McMichael who scored. Also, it was offside. So nobody scored. It's 1-0 still.

GOAL: Berggren buries one from just inside the right circle and it's 2-0 Blues 1:05 into the second.

Nick Lardis looked great on a line with Connor Bedard late last season. He needs to show he can do it away from Bedard, too. Surprisingly rough start for him.

Big ovation for Niklas Hjalmarsson on the board, then the camera pans to Jonathan Toews standing next to him and the place erupts.

Yet another shorthanded breakaway for Frank Nazar, but he can't beat Hofer. If he can start finishing more consistently, Nazar can be a monster. If.

Some chuckleheads out here booing 20-year-old Artyom Levshunov during the home-opener intros. Like HE picked himself over Ivan Demidov or something.

Some day, at some future home opener, fans should just go absolutely ballistic for the introduction of the skills coach or something. Like a three-minute ovation for Brian Keane, just to confuse everyone.

I'm watching this Sharks-Stars game, and gotta say, San Jose without Celebrini looks a bit like Chicago without Bedard. Turns out missing your best player is less than ideal.

THE LAST FIRST: WINTER K2: I was briefly obsessed with mountaineering books and movies a couple years back, and this one had all the baked-in problems: Summit fever, bad motivations (i.e. Instagram clout), unprofessional commercialized expeditions, and, of course, human hubris.

Here's how you know "Lanterns" was elite TV: Every revelation in the finale was exactly what I (and, I'm guessing, just about everyone) expected, and it didn't diminish the impact one iota. Good writing. Good acting. Good stuff.

There's no chance Kevin Korchinski gets put on waivers, yet he's still living in the team hotel, awaiting his housing letter. After a strong close to last season, Korchinski's trying to prove he belongs in the NHL. But will he get a fair shot? My story: www.nytimes.com/athletic/765...

Kevin Korchinski is growing confidence, but Jeff Blashill’s trust is a work in progress (Gift Article)
Now that he's in the NHL to stay, Korchinski finally believes he belongs — and it's evident in his play on the ice.

Blashill on Bedard: "I don’t have any firm timeline at all. We’ll see. He’s got a checkup at some point; at that point we’ll know where he’s at. But I don’t have a firm timeline on either one of those — the checkup or when he’ll be ready."
