“I think if I make that save, it breaks my wrist.” “Yeah, well, you’re not making that save. No offense.” Today’s Goalie Union podcast was a blast, breaking down all of the action from opening night, including Jakub Dobes’ ridiculous glove save on William Nylander’s slap shot.

Final- Vegas 5, Chicago 2 Ryan Craig becomes the 5th Golden Knights head coach to win in his debut behind the bench. The franchise is a perfect 5-0-0 in those games.

Mark Stone empty netter to make it 5-2. Great play by Barbashev to outmuscle Bowen Byram along the wall to set it up.

Vegas answers immediately with a goal by Noah Hanifin in transition. He had all kinds of time in front of the net, and beat Knight five-hole. 4-2

Vegas turns it over, and Patrick Kane dekes around Carter Hart and roofs it. 3-2 with 15:56 to play.

Eichel makes it 3-1 Vegas on a pass from Barbashev from behind the net. The Golden Knights top line was just cooking the Chicago defense for that entire shift. Felt like they had a man advantage.

Vegas mixed up its defensive coverage, allowing Greenway to walk in and snipe one by Hart. 2-1 You don't see miscommunication between Theodore and McNabb very often. Still shaking the rust off.

Howden and Marner got a shorthanded 2-on-1, Marner fed Howden on the backdoor, and Spencer Knight made a sensational lateral save.

The Blackhawks have not defended the rush well at all early in this game. Tons of space for Vegas to work with speed.

Jacob Markström is looking as athletic as ever in his Panthers debut. That sequence of saves near the end of the period was impressive. It wasn’t a technical work of art, but he was just being an athlete, getting his pads in the way of the puck.

Strong start to this game for Brandon Bussi, who is holding Carolina in it while they find their game. He’s never afraid to use an unexpected save selection to surprise a shooter. That half butterfly save on Lundell’s 5-hole attempt in transition is a good example.

It has been Yaroslav Askarov versus the world so far. Shots are 13-1 Vegas, but it’s still 0-0.

020

Jesse Granger @jessegranger.bsky.social · 27/09/2026

Vegas’ second PP unit created a lot more than the first on that one. Two incredible saves by Askarov, including a beauty of a blocker stop on Connelly’s one-timer from point blank.

At this point it’s no secret Lukáš Dostál is one of my favorite goalies to watch. His narrow stance gives him a unique look, and is the foundation for how he plays the position.

Jack Eichel wins it 5-4 for Vegas in OT. Now they're going to hold a practice shootout.

Zac Jones made two really nice plays at the blue line for Utah, and eventually Tomas Lavoie scored to put the Mammoth back up, 4-3 with 1:31 to play.

Jesse Granger @jessegranger.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

Sebastian Cossa has been impressive tonight. Calm, balanced, positionally sound, and ahead of the play most of the night. He has also done a good job of keeping his eyes on pucks that hit him (or traffic in front) to get quick covers and avoid scramble situations.

Jesse Granger @jessegranger.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

That Vegas power play didn't generate much, but then shortly after Barrett Hayton tipped Lauzon's shot from the point past his own goalie to make it 3-2.

020

Jesse Granger @jessegranger.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

Sebastian Cossa has been solid in the first period for Utah. He just made a huge lateral save to rob Howden on a 2-on-1.

Alex Holtz has been Vegas’ best forward all night, and he gets them on the board to tie it 1-1 in the 3rd.

0110

Jesse Granger @jessegranger.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

Hart and Askarov trade backdoor saves. Hart with the pad. Askarov with the glove. They’re the best players the ice tonight so it’s no surprise there are no goals through the first half of the game.

020

Jesse Granger @jessegranger.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

Askarov’s butterfly is a cheat code. On that Grade A chance by Holtz, he just walled off the bottom of the net with his pads, and slid calmly along as Holtz changed the angle.
