She did "multiple PhDs worth of work" in understanding the publishing system as Chief Scientist. Unfortunately, it's clear that her limited exposure to diverse voices has resulted in a real lack of clarity and understanding of global publishing. Not sure all those PhDs would be defended successfully

On a @researchconsulting.bsky.social webinar, listening to Cathy Foley (ex-Chief Scientist of Australia), you can see why open access is only seen as a business expense, with zero sense of getting to the root of the issue of the cost of publishing. Australia has a real opportunity, lost under Cathy.

Oh! And yes... the version that made it to the family Christmas dinner table left my mouth open with admiration for factual accuracy, but missing most of the facts. Still, mum doesn't really know... best for all of us. Thankfully, all social media is blocked through her library WiFi (good old FE).

Not spiking 'by the doctors' obviously... The hospital bill was another €400 on top of the € 800 ambulance fee. A good learning experience in the end, all part of adulting class 102. Like the end of Toy Story 3, you've eventually got to wave them off and onto new owners.

Well, so did we... but in the small print of virtually all insurance policies is the line, "any alcohol related or induced issues are fully billable" (or words to that effect). Thankfully, the combination of a suspicion of drink-spiking by the doctors and the GHIC (former EHIC) meant it got covered.

My experience was my daughter laughing about the ambulance they had to take. While my heart was sinking, panic crept in. When she got the €800 ambo bill, she instantly understood why I was shouting, "Get an Uber!!! It will be €10!!!" To the constant refrain, "But she's out cold, she needs an ambo!"

Publishers produce "scientometric pseudoscience by proposing quantitative metrics, such as citation counts, impact factors, etc. Although the limitations and pitfalls of these metrics have been extensively documented many public policies continue to rely solely on these indicators to assess science"

Helping a friend apply for a job at @springernature.com, which utilises MyWorkdayJobs. My friend has now lost over two hours of work on that system, and he is no longer pursuing the job. How many great people do companies lose in recruitment because they use terrible systems like this one?

Mark Huskisson @markhusk.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
I agree on the broad systemic point. We're encouraged or forced to compete for resources across ScholComm and research. This is the way of the highly marketised HE sector. Many of us will just not compete for grants or bids because we do not have a 'competition engine.'

Mark Huskisson @markhusk.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
I understand, but it's not a matter of either-or for most of our orgs. Because there isn't direct collaboration (let's use Janeway, eLife, and PKP as examples), it doesn't mean there is competition. The lack of one does not imply the other. Collaboration is how PKP works; it doesn't work without it.

Where are you seeing this, Kevin? In the open source/community-led area, this may arise when there just isn't the funding available to enable collaboration. Or where there isn't (yet) community uptake of features. But for membership organisations, there is generally more money to collaborate.

I get it. But _what_ cup. Which cup? What is 'a cup'? I know it makes sense to those who have used it to bake for their formative and adult lives, but when you're stood looking at a recipe in a UK kitchen and it starts to introduce cups. It just seems totally arbitrary (I know it's not, but...).
200
Mark Huskisson @markhusk.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
True. Can't argue with that. But of what cup? Where is this mythical Arthurian cup that we seek? The one cup that gives meaning to all recipe cups...?
100
Mark Huskisson @markhusk.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
I mean, we could use the seemingly arbitrary measure: the cup used in US recipes. It seems to mean different sizes and volumes depending on what you're measuring/weighing. Assuming we're not talking about the imperial cup I guess at about 250g, but that is entirely wrong if I'm measuring flour...

I assumed that but didn't want to commit the iced tea equivalent of tourists brewing their tea bags directly in hotel kettles. I mean, I see the logic but... c'mon.
010
Mark Huskisson @markhusk.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
Well, let's see how this goes. Iced Tea is usually served far too sweet on my US trips (and the retail versions 🤢), so I'll drop the amount to a tablespoon for the 4000ml and see how that goes. How much lemon juice are you recommending @oldenoughtosayit.bsky.social?

The politics of knowledge infrastructure is no longer an abstract concern; it is policy. Publishers and platform providers are squarely in the crosshairs of this huge shift in legislation and policymaking. A piece on this in Scholarly Futures last week: scholarlyfutures.substack.com/p/from-infra...

I saw that Marjane Satrapi died aged only 56. I only know her as the author of the Persepolis graphic novel (and the subsequent film). So I searched for more over lunch, and her family said that she had "died of sadness" over her husband's death. What a world.
A frame from the Persepolis graphic novel of older Persian women chastising a younger girl for wearing a shirt that reads "Punk is not ded"

I assumed that you meant for payment – darn my poor grammar. Although I'm pretty sure there is a Judge Dredd series in 2000AD where they play pool as you describe. Or am I conflating that with the Harlem Heroes in Aeroball?

Thanks, Tom. I don't know what I'm most stirred about. The clear support and funding for open source, or the fact that not a single publisher person I know or have spoken to is in any way aware that using US Cloud services or US-owned/positioned platforms will have a level of consequence. Very soon.

Open Access is not sovereignty if the infrastructure layer it sits on is dependent on commercial platforms. The OA label describes the content layer. It says nothing about the infrastructure layer. Knowledge sovereignty, Diamond OA, and open infrastructure: open.substack.com/pub/scholarl...

The European Research Area (ERA) Act will create a European framework that will transform copyright, research assessment, and data-sharing. It will govern how research is published, accessed, and evaluated. If you're involved in scholarly communications, you need to give this Act your attention.

The Stockholm archipelago in Sweden is lit up in a golden bath of sunlight, with a mysterious mist hanging low in front of the silhouetted island. The water shimmers like a glowing, rippling mirror. The use of archipelago photography in PKP's newsletter represents the distributed yet connected nature of free and open source software as well as open access communities. The photo was taken by PKP's Jason Nugent on his travels.

And yes, I understand the reality of the costs of putting on an international conferences with all of its meals and showcases. I'm not saying this is wrong. But we all need to be honest with ourselves that having corporate interests underwrite and enable these events determines the sector narrative.

Mark Huskisson @markhusk.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
The framing of events determines the narratives of our community. UKSG, ALPSP, SSP etc are vendor-publisher-library events that work "together to share experiences and work together on shared challenges." It's a fine ideal, but they are imbued with the commercial imperative of profit and extraction.

Interesting contrast on my timeline this morning from LILAC on information literacy and UKSG. Both are being held simultaneously. There are 3 vendors at @lilacconf.bsky.social, meanwhile @uksg.bsky.social is a joint publisher and library conference (and those who supply them with tech and services).

Interesting to know what @jisc.bsky.social and #CAUL provided a commercial publisher to publish six #DiamondOA journals when neither invests in the huge non-commercial Diamond OA community infrastructure, the majority of which is based in institutional libraries. There is always money for the #Big5.

They seem to completely misunderstand that they actively ceded that data and research sovereignty to multinational publishers a long time ago and no longer 'own' that research or have free access to that information and data. The naïeveté of this myopic view and is frankly shocking and disturbing.

Mark Huskisson @markhusk.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
The complete lack of understanding about what it means to establish research, data, and scientific sovereignty amongst senior members of the UK's research community and government is shocking. Their belief is that they own that knowledge and are protecting it from future AI and big tech threats.
