Fortunately, Yankee fans’ long experience with post-season baseball will allow them to shrug off this game with graceful, measured calmness.

Looking for this Feb 1949 issue of Sports Illustrated, unrelated to classic SI that launched in 1954. There is an article on Satchel Paige that I would like to read, and I would be grateful for a scan of it. I know that is asking a lot--I have tried the Hall of Fame and eBay. Much thanks.

The AL West has won the last two non-Dodger championships. Their collective 2026 performance is not an imbalance problem that needs to be corrected, but an inevitable consequence of this playoff format and some bad baseball decisions.

Have you, or do you plan to, done similar work for the 1949/1950 NAL (recognized by SABR as major leagues)? I am part of a group starting a related research project.

Assuming this is 1945, the Monarchs played that day at Comiskey Park. Robinson did not play—his final Monarchs game was 8/16.

My idea is that the lower 48 use one time zone (don’t care which) and local communities decide when things happen. The “what time is France match?” is much more annoying to me.

Yes, I am sure the basic problem is that people can’t get out of bed and start their day and they want to government to fix this. (This won’t help.)

Mark Armour @markarmour04.bsky.social · 15/07/2026

Hmm. Pro sports used to be 8pm, concerts in my memory were at 9 but the main act might be 11 or later. But kids events? My childhood “clock” was the prime time TV schedule—Network came on at 8 and by 9 I was in bed.

It was in 1974. (January to October) It was an act intended to save energy. It was supposed to last longer but scrapped because people did not like dark winter mornings.

The Red Sox are apparently NOT going to sell at the deadline. The main flaw has been that the star prospect class (Anthony, Mayer, Campbell) has failed (injuries mainly) while the acquisitions have been excellent. Get Crochet and Anthony back and let’s enjoy the second half. ⚾️ ⚾️ ⚾️

It’s been my favorite for many years, BUT so much of that is tied to his story and I assume everyone else’s favorite card has similar non-intrinsic meaning to the beholder. Trying to set all that aside, it is a beautiful card in a beautiful set.

It might be wrong, and Paige was careless about it himself (literally, as in he did not care). At some point historians collectively agreed to use the official documents. He also was careless about the spelling of his nickname, occasionally insisting on one way or another.

On August 18, 1950, all baseball games observed a moment of silence on the second anniversary of Babe Ruth's death. Does anyone know how long this tradition continued?

June 1950 Black Barons sold contract of Willie Mays to Giants. Next 80 games he hit .353 for Trenton. On 9/24 Birmingham honored him between games of DH. He got a wrist watch, and Mays actually played for the Black Barons in the games(!), 3-for-7 with two doubles and two "sensational" catches.

Perfect ("satirical") summary of the AI bubble. The whole thing is gold: www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/ai-...

"Benjamin owns a farm. He employs 100 workers plowing his fields. His total payroll is $10 million/year. One day, he buys a mule, which provides the worker who uses it with a modest 10 percent productivity gain. Benjamin fires 99 of his workers and purchases 99 mules, expecting a 1,000 percent productivity gain. The driverless mules cause plow damage to his property in excess of $50 million. Benjamin loses another $5 million due to the loss of productivity from his one remaining employee, who no longer guides a plow but instead spends 100 percent of his time shoveling mule shit."
