You just reminded me that I did similar. When Super Star Wars came out, I got the Master Cheat & Debug code from Electronic Gaming Monthly. Submitted it to Super Play and got the credit. Feels good to get that off my chest 😂

I’m in Amsterdam and a popular retro game shop has a battered Nintendo TV-Game 15 for 500euros (and another slightly better one behind the counter for 600euros) 😳

Hudson Soft released Mario Bros. Special for multiple Japanese systems in 1984. Pictured are 6 different cassette versions – and that’s not even all of them! I also have the NEC PC-8001 version, plus several releases on 2.8", 3.5" and 5.25" floppy disks. That makes 14 copies in my collection so far!

I’ve never seen a Hudson Soft title like this one before and it's a great example of mid-1980s obscure Nintendo history. Featured on the disk are 3 games: Baseball Fanatic, Nintendo Golf and Punch Ball Mario Bros. #パンチボールマリオブラザーズ #マリオ #任天堂 3/3

Firstly, it’s on 5.25" disk and most games for this short-lived machine were on cassette. A separate disk drive was also needed which sold in low numbers. Secondly, this isn't a standard retail version but a plain cover compilation disk, probably released as a dealer demo. 2/3

There are rare Mario games and then there are seriously rare Mario games, like this one released on the Japan-exclusive NEC PC-8001mkIISR - just added to my collection. Punch Ball Mario Bros is an obscure game anyway, so what makes this version extra special? 1/3

A Sharp My Computer TV C1 19C-C1F (Basically a 19" CRT with integrated Famicom) just sold for ¥1.6M ($10,140US). First released in Oct 1983 for ¥145,000, the Famicom circuitry connects to the TV internally via RGB, rather than the ordinary composite-video, producing a noticeably cleaner image.

The site of Nintendo’s former Kanda Sudachō building has finally been cleared over a year since the demolition notice was posted. It was the home of HAL Laboratory amongst other Tokyo business operations before they moved to Kanda Square. Images: @takeMJtoyo @takashikiso @GameLabo_sansai

3 different retail versions of Mario's Early Years CD-ROM Collection for PC/DOS, released in 1993 by Software Toolworks in the US. Of course, there are many other variants of these 'edutainment' titles, both compilations and individual games, including for the Super Nintendo.

Nintendo definitely had a vibe going in the 1950s with this design, mixing Art Deco type with the familiar gothic 'N'.

Two Japanese soft vinyl figures ("sofubi") from my collection, both 40 years old. Mario on the left made by Bandai (バンダイ), Bowser made by Kawada (カワダ).

The National Videogame Museum’s summer 2026 exhibition is specially curated to put personal videogame stories, and collections centre stage. I'm excited to support this event and bring some lesser-known items for the public to view! The event runs in Sheffield, UK from 18 July. @nvmuk.bsky.social

What a super awesome t-shirt from @wiloverton.bsky.social Love it! And made even more special because I featured in Super Play issue 28 as a 15 year old kid, with the fastest Speed Metroid time 😮‍💨

Nintendo's new Technology Development Center in Kyoto is due for completion March 2029 and will serve as a new R&D base for Nintendo software and hardware. Plus developer space. They'll be 9 floors above ground and 1 below ground. Oh, to be a fly on the wall when it's built!

3 different sizes of Nintendo playing cards from the MarioMuseum.com collection (or 'Trump' as they're known in Japan). King size (1990s), regular size (2000s) and miniature (1960s).

I've just added the 5th (!) variant of Mario Teaches Typing to my collection. And that's not even including Mario Teaches Typing 2. Who knew there were so many! I have a soft spot for this title due to it being Charles Martinet's debut as Mario.

Super Mario World 'Boo Boo Mario' (or Būbū Mario, ブーブーマリオ) was a 1993 Banpresto-licensed amusement arcade kiddie ride/video game. It's not often you see both the Mario and Yoshi figures from this machine to bid on at auction, just a little refurbishment needed!

While 10,000 copies of the gold cartridge version of Punch-Out!! were produced, only 100 were made of these. Here's a pic of my copy of the cartridge.

I picked up some cool new items at Nintendo Store KYOTO last week. The Super Mario × JR Kyushu campaign features specially wrapped, Mario-themed trains operating in Japan from 29 Nov 2025, to the end of June this year. The Nintendo Store is selling collectable magnets and stickers to mark the event.

30 days to go! New details have been revealed by Kyoto Marathon and sponsor Nintendo. Super Mario Bros. music will be played to liven up the start of the race! Runner's bags, the runner name board and photo spots will all feature the Super Mario Bros 40th logo. I really can't wait for this one!

A very nice, vintage Nintendo commemorative medal sold at auction today for over ¥81,000. That's about $531USD/£401GBP Probably dating from the late 1960s/early 70s, it features the N&B Block logo, Nintendo's short-lived line of toy bricks, intended to rival Lego. Very cool!

Happy 40th Anniversary Mario! 🎉 Ok, he’s been around a little longer than that, but it was 40 years ago today that the iconic Super Mario Bros. was released on the Famicom. To celebrate this milestone, I’ve spent the last 40 days counting down 40 different Mario formats! 1/3

18/ Today, the Famicom cartridge is iconic not just for the games it was home to, but for its place in video game history. It made it possible for Mario to become one of the most beloved characters in all of entertainment.

12/ It teaches you the rules without any tutorial text. World 1-1 is often praised by game designers as a masterclass in intuitive design: a Goomba teaches you about danger, a Super Mushroom surprises you by moving away, and a pipe invites exploration.

11/ This was the one that started it all for me, it’s packed full of nostalgia! That feeling of reading the words “Welcome to Warp Zone!” for the first time. Or humming along to the music. Gaming joy in its purest form. It has a timeless “pick up and play” appeal.

Mario Museum @mario.museum · 13/09/2025
9/ Super Mario Bros. (1985) is the game that defined an era. It’s a timeless masterpiece, introducing Mario and Luigi to the world and setting the standard for platformers.
100
Mario Museum @mario.museum · 13/09/2025
8/ Mario’s first appearance on the Famicom was in Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr., both launch day titles in 1983. By this time, Mario had moved on from being simply known as ‘Jumpman.’ And unusually (in hindsight at least), Mario also played the villain role in DK Jr..
100
Mario Museum @mario.museum · 13/09/2025
7/ Two of my favourite obscure Mario appearances have to be “Mario World”, a mini game/educational software found on the Family BASIC V3 cart (1985) and the rare Gold Punch-Out!! cart (1987) featuring Mario as referee.
100
Mario Museum @mario.museum · 13/09/2025
2/ When the Famicom, with its striking red-and-white colour scheme, launched in Japan in 1983, it changed everything. It was powered by an 8-bit CPU and 2KB of RAM, which is modest by modern standards, but revolutionary at the time.

13/ Donkey Kong (1984) and Donkey Kong Jr. (1984) also appeared on the Coleco Adam. These games had both bundled versions and the separate retail versions had super cool packaging in the shape of the original arcade machines!

12/ The quality varied wildly but for many UK kids this was their first intro to Mario, and just having him on your bedroom computer was a big deal. There were many versions available, including some regional variants from across Europe and Australia.

Mario Museum @mario.museum · 12/09/2025
11/ Ports of Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. (1986) were released in the UK by Ocean, for the Sinclair Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, C64, and MSX. The now-defunct Ocean Software was later acquired by Infogrames in 1996, the company that has evolved into ‪@bandainamcoent.com‬ today.
100
Mario Museum @mario.museum · 12/09/2025
10/ Nintendo’s Golf and Nintendo’s Tennis (1984) were both released for Sharp X1 and NEC PC-8801, these games weren’t officially branded as Mario titles, but the artwork and on-screen elements are clearly Mario-inspired.

Mario Museum @mario.museum · 12/09/2025
9/ The “Westside” version of Mario Bros. (1983) was released for the NEC PC-8001 and PC-8801, and developed by the obscure Westside software house. It’s one of THE rarest Mario games ever made, with graphics and gameplay that are vastly different from Nintendo’s arcade original.
