This is presented as a libertarian freedom (the freedom to access and use information), but it doesn't have any corollary to freedom _from_ having one's data or information used for instrumental ends. If you can be observed by a machine you were basically asking for it, and who could be blamed?

and this is why muckrock does not work for me, it has really enabled a surveillance that just furthers biased base harm

If you think about the data that is constructed about a person by observing their public behavior as a kind of "affordance" or "handle" for doing things on or to that person (including compiling further information about them), the technicized use of public data is inherently nonconsensual.

The software profession, an immature field marked by repeated ethical violations, has no such guidelines about the proper use of public data about subjects. It instead has foundational myths (specifically "information freedom") that say that you cannot do any wrong by using data if you can see it.

some questions you can ask to evaluate a new "public bathroom" 1. can a child use it without an adult? 2. can you use it at night? 3. can a disabled person use it? 4. is it owned by a vendor? 5. does it require technology? 6. are people being paid to clean it?

While we're at it, let's build public showers so the homeless can get clean, and a convenient laundry service so their clothes aren't filthy. But at a minimum, public bathrooms.

"these people" include some who are considered leftists or at least in-group with progressives, there's work to do everywhere
Michael McClean would like to charge chicagoans $1 to use public bathrooms.

i behold public bathrooms all the time at parks and libraries and train stations, they just aren't open. chicago needs to open the actual public bathrooms instead of doing whatever the hell this is

one delightful thing about risographs are the hilarious misprints, very whimsy
a risograph print of hot pink, yellow and blue of a cat that is not lined up with the words "caterwauling will continue until morale improves"

and a goose print with the eyes all googly and not lined up to the goose bodies

this thread caused a stir with some candidates and the rumors are true, it seems Hilario Dominguez is circulating petitions to gather enough signatures to run for CPS Board Prez one of the many problems is that his personnel file is already public and it has a complaint in it that doozy

some days i start my day and some days my day is started for me notes are coming in from around the city about who is or will be running for CPS Board President it feels like I'm watching a Michigan State versus Ohio State football game, I want everyone to lose

the rest of this email to all members, most of who are women, goes on to complain about how OIG should not be confirming the existence of investigations the thing is, they confirm the existence of investigations all the time through FOIA responses the CTU response is very inappropriate

CTU has released its own statement in support of Hilario Dominguez, its endorsed candidate for chicago school board "the Chicago Tribune published an incomplete article" the reason it's incomplete is because it doesn't include all the other women's stories who have also been harassed by Hilario
An email sent by Chicago Teacher's Union defending Hilario Dominguez

Last week, the Chicago Tribune published an incomplete article that announced that the CPS Office of the Inspector General has reopened a case it had concluded and reported as unsubstantiated. It is re-investigating a nearly decade-old allegation about the candidate we endorsed for school board president, Hilario Dominguez.
However, before Hilario is a candidate for office, he is a special education teacher, a CPS graduate, and he is a member of our union.
This email is to inform you about what the union is doing in response to the news.
We take allegations seriously and we take due process seriously.

i will, however, go do something nice for myself like get a fancy caramel apple and work on some art but it takes active reminding to do that as we watch men in public discussion say absurd things like, omg this is a pattern
020
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
the women i have been in conversation with and have been working with all stopped to take a moment to check in with each other on how we're doing and the thing is, we're ok because dealing with sexual harassment and the culture of defending it is so necessary to everyday functioning it just is
131
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
it's incredibly harmful that part of what we had to do is demonstrate that this is a pattern, publicly we knew Hilario's response to press would be awful because we've lived it in real life already
010
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
the investigative processes are incredibly unfriendly (charitable description) to women who have something to say many of us have been saying for years that Hilario should not be near power, and at the very least should not be Board President
120
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
no, it wasn't a one-off and there are more women who are willing to come forward now also
121
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
i do not think we have to admit that the timing is suspicious at all, we can simply choose to believe the woman who is making the brave choice to speak has decided the time is safer now than it was before or the impending danger is worth the risk
040
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
i do not have to wonder why this story is coming to press now it's really hard to get women to discuss with anyone when a man has sent cease and desist letters and it's even harder to build trust with a victim in order to run a story

making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
when we talk about the culture of sexual harassment, it includes people with power overrunning victims, not listening and not behaving any way to increase safety for victims there is no scenario where Hilario should have been elevated inside CTU to political director and running for Board President
140
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
something that is not obvious in this reporting but happened at the time women made complaints about Hilario's behavior not just to bosses at The Resurrection Project but also to Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez's office and students + community had meetings with CTU the response was to catch and kill

Hilario Dominguez, current CTU political director and prospective CTU Board President candidate, also has complaints from when he worked at The Resurrection Project and it's not good, actually it's bad
The summer of 2017, there was an incident brought to my attention involving a staff member and a young woman that was part of our youth summer program. I was approached by [young woman], who was a minor at the time, she stated there was inappropriate language and behavior from a TRP staff member, Hilario Dominguez. The language and behavior ranged from text messages, to questions and comments about her dating life and physical appearance. He also was alone with her on more than one occasion and would offer rides home. The behavior did escalate to a point where she became uncomfortable and came to me about it.

i do think you've made it clear that you think schools should close, that under-enrollment is a fixed concept so we are left with obvious choices we disagree and i am going to leave it there
000
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
i am not sure why you are intent on making this a gotcha kind of conversation but i don't find it particularly productive if this is the place where you make a stand, that white parents (which I am not), need to make individual choices then it seems like you are ok with accumulation of whiteness
100
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
we are not and never were going to individual choice out of systemic issues

we didn't really bus many white students either, we bussed far more Black students and we've never really stopped forcing Black students from traveling the farthest to get to school

I also think we need to center disabled students in the discussion of student assignment instead of treating them as an afterthought and that opening up the question of how we decide which students go to which schools will lead to domino conversations, e.g. transportation

for what it's worth, NYC also runs controlled enrollment at the elementary level — you are not guaranteed a seat at the closest school to you I'm not clear on what argument you're referring to so it might be helpful for you to restate what you think is being proposed
000
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
right and while he will point out you can choice into schools, that's not entirely the case, i think i heard there are only so many classrooms at Hawthorne and Burley so why do we make this tiered system, i can agree that the District has done a bad job managing, they cover for wealth accumulation
010
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
we had 600 words in an OpEd, for a more full imagining of how systems can work, you'd have to ask questions! we do think the District would need to start by revising its student assignment procedures — rather than protect white families, let's look at how students with disabilities are assigned
010
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
that's a pretty strong statement, i think we do a pretty decent job at asking a lot of questions and talking to a lot of people and we can always do more NYC required that some of the fundraising be centrally pooled; aligning parents on funding pressure is not a bad thing
010
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
actually, i think the way you're reading it makes it clear that you'd still protect the property right to a certain kind of education
000
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
i think this is missing the point
000
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
i think using "under-enrolled" is a dog whistle it's tied to a formula based on student assignment practices which are infused with bias

one interesting factor in CPS is that we do track if kids are in their attendance boundary and attend and if kids from outside the boundary attend most kids in CPS do not attend their neighborhood school but that does mask white schools that tend to enroll and accumulate whiteness

it's helpful for some in chicago to live in the moment that school closures in 2013 were an anomaly, but it wasn't it has been a part of regular conversation to close majority Black schools since the 1960s and chicago has been doing it since then too
073
making art @marigoldmagic.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
another article references a different 22 schools targeted for closure 1980, Chicago Tribune
Twenty two neighborhood schools in Chicago have been targeted for possible closing this fall...

chicago talks about 2013 as though it was a watershed moment at CPS but the truth is, the Board of Education has been closing majority Black schools for decades from 1976, Chicago Defender h/t @aoife.bsky.social
The board also approved closing of 13 more schools, 10 of which are in the black community. Earlier the closing of 13 others had been approved.

students transfer to various buses and transit in order to get to school, so it's not a bad stretch from that viewpoint
