This brings me so much joy: I'm so excited I can't believe it. Which I guess shows what a strange personal bond one can form with an author and their work.

Say nice things to each other. And mean them. Don't ask questions to impress the audience. Ask them out of curiosity. A conference should not only be a stage for displaying status. It should also be a place where people feel seen. Stop making everything a performance.

NOIRLab image of the week Distorted Sunset over Rubin Credit: NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory/NOIRLab/SLAC/AURA/H. Stockebrand noirlab.edu/public/image... 🧪🔭
A flattened Sun hovers beside NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory as the observing team prepares for another night of scanning the sky. To the left of Rubin are the Rubin Auxiliary Telescope (AuxTel) (left) and the Rubin Seeing Monitor (right), both of which help measure the atmosphere above the site.

The flattening of the Sun is a mirage caused by atmospheric refraction, in which denser, colder air layers near the Earth’s surface bend sunlight more strongly than in the upper air layers, vertically compressing the Sun’s disk. The brilliant orange color of the sky is the result of a process called Rayleigh scattering. Because sunlight must travel through a thicker slice of the Earth’s atmosphere at sunset, blue and violet light with shorter wavelengths is scattered away, allowing only the longer-wavelength orange and red light to reach our eyes.

Once the Sun sets and the sky darkens, Rubin Observatory begins another night of observations for the decade-long Legacy Survey of Space and Time. The distortion of light by the atmosphere continues into the night, but astronomers and engineers have devised solutions! For Rubin, the AuxTel measures atmospheric transmission, which is how much light passes directly through Earth’s atmosphere in a given area, while the Rubin Seeing Monitor measures atmospheric turbulence. Astronomers combine these measurements with other data in the monitoring system of the observatory to ultimately improve the precision of Rubin’s final images.

Rubin is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science (DOE/SC). Rubin Observatory is a joint program of NSF NOIRLab and DOE’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, who cooperatively operate Rubin.

🕳️⭐ Webb has found the strongest evidence yet for ‘black hole stars’! Webb's observations suggest that a little red dot called GLIMPSE-17775 is in fact a supermassive black hole enveloped in a dense cocoon of partially ionised gas. 🔭 🧪 ☀️ 1/2
A field of galaxies against the black background of space. In the centre is a bright-white elliptical galaxy that is the core of the Abell S1063 galaxy cluster. Around the core are short, curved red lines, which are distant background galaxies magnified and warped by gravitational lensing. A couple of foreground stars appear large and bright with Webb’s signature eight-point diffraction spike pattern. Toward the very bottom, slightly off center toward the right, is a small red dot that is highlighted by an orange square outline. A larger orange square in the top right corner shows the object in more detail. The object, labeled “GLIMPSE-17775” looks like a fuzzy red dot with a yellow core. Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, V. VAR! In the early morning hours #OTD in 1923, Edwin Hubble took a photo plate of M31 that showed a Cepheid variable star. Using Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s distance-luminosity relationship, Hubble concluded that M31 is another galaxy outside the Milky Way. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️ Image: Carnegie Observatories
Photo plate of Hubble's famous "VAR!" discovery. This is a photonegative plate of an image of the Andromeda Galaxy, with several small annotations made in grease pencil. One of them was previously marked "N" for "nova," but the N has been crossed out and replaced with an excited "VAR!" to indicate a Cepheid Variable.
