Perfect Bluesky discourse grenade
Does the existential threat from Al raised by Jacob Coxon when he resigned from Anthropic reflect a real concern that you observe on a daily basis among young researchers?

Not among researchers, but the young people who work at these companies operate in a world [Silicon Valley, Berkeley, etc.] where these kinds of discussions are commonplace. *Many of them aren't really engineers; they come from the humanities, philosophy, or other disciplines.*(emphasis mine) They're 25 years old, they're naive, they don't do engineering work, they've never worked at large companies where real products are developed for real people, with discipline.

Piranesi says the world and the epistemic bubbles we actually live in are prisons and but also liberation, that the terrible limits on cognition imposed by [religion, science, devastating illness] are also protective freedoms, that amnesia is salvific but makes us brutally vulnerable to abuse.

Yes I think we all wanted to hear more on the politics/democracy/practical side of things. We can certainly answer the call to action around building tools for human intellectual work, but how to slow or prevent or de-fang the machine god construction?

This talk by @himself.bsky.social was wonderful. Models mechanize, map, + remix the "house of intellect", connecting together previously disconnected hallways of knowledge. LLMs are not stochastic parrots but mechanical bards. Cites: Jacques Barzun, Albert B. Lord, Nestor Guillen, Herbert Simon

Yeah maybe I shouldn't have used the word "control" but I don't mean everyone is fiddling around with parameters and making feeds. But they can choose between feeds made by others, and this is all easy and accessible and highlighted.

I feel like the marketing I've seen from Blacksky has been good at this? At least, it works on me lol. I'm obviously not a marketing expert, but it's sad to talk to people who DO want control and they don't even know about this.

It's infuriating how the U.S. is treating our international researchers. We are so incredibly lucky that talented people want to come to our country to study, research, work, and build. Trump, Musk, and their cronies are destroying the best parts of science in the U.S.
