A fierce cold front and hurricane-force winds whipped the scattered flames into an unstoppable wall of fire that roared across the landscape at more than 30 miles per hour. Intense heat created a thermal vacuum that sucked air out of the surrounding canyons, creating cyclonic fire tornadoes. /4
The Great Fire of 1910 didn’t just burn the forest. It permanently altered the ecology, topography and species composition of the Northern Rockies. Before 1910, the mountains of northern Idaho and western Montana were blanketed by dense, ancient forests. The fire wiped these out in a weekend. The extreme heat baked and sterilized the topsoil, killing the underground networks of fungi, microbes and seeds that are necessary for a forest to naturally regenerate. Massive mudslides and rockfalls choked the canyons. Millions of tons of black ash and charred topsoil washed into rivers, suffocating fish populations and altering the paths of the rivers for decades. Lodgepole pine seeds flooded the blackened landscape. Instead of a diverse, multi-layered ancient ecosystem, the burn zones grew back as dense, single-species thickets. This massive ecological shift created a landscape that was more susceptible to bugs, diseases and large-scale fires a century later.

An unusually dry winter, lack of snowpack and months of severe summer drought left the Northern Rockies brittle. Thousands of small fires were already burning throughout the area, sparked by lightning, coal-burning locomotives and homesteaders. The devastating catalyst arrived on Aug. 20, 1910. /3
Map showing the areas burned during the Great Fire of 1910. It’s difficult to wrap one’s mind around the terrifying magnitude of the blaze. During the peak of the inferno, the wall of fire moved at an unbelievable average speed of 83,333 acres per hour. That’s more than 23 acres per second. The gale-force winds didn’t just push the flames forward along the ground. They threw massive, flaming debris miles ahead of the main wall. New walls of fire were constantly igniting across entire valleys, creating the illusion that the primary inferno was leaping across mountain ranges at the speed of the wind itself. The fire killed 87 people, including 78 firefighters, and leveled several mining and logging towns. The immense smoke traveled as far east as New England and as far north as Greenland. Before the fire, the federal government could only create national forests out of public land in the West. The 1910 disaster proved that fires did not care about property lines, and devastating private land fires directly threatened the nation’s water supply, timber resources and economy. /2
“Log stacks” of white pine, ca. 1900. In the early 20th century, deforestation in the northern U.S. was driven by decades of industrial logging, rapid urban expansion and agricultural clearing. By 1920, forest cover across the U.S. hit its lowest level in history, dropping to roughly 721 million acres from an estimated 1.023 billion acres before European settlement. The iconic white pine forests of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota were almost entirely clear-cut by the early 1900s. Loggers left behind vast, barren fields of flammable debris (slash), which triggered wildfires across the region. Congress had been locked in a bitter, decades-long stalemate over conservation bills meant to address the environmental consequences of these activities, including severe soil erosion, river siltation, devastating floods, and the extinction of species such as the passenger pigeon. It took a catastrophic fire to force a radical shift in federal policy. Photo credit: U.S. Forest Service.

#ResistanceRoots Today in history, 1910: A massive wildfire consumes roughly 3 million acres across three Northwestern states in 36 hours, killing 87 people. The Great Fire of 1910 spurred expansion of our national forests, but Trump wants to repeat the mistakes that led to this deadly blaze. /1
Early U.S. Forest Service firefighters head to the front lines of a massive wildfire during the Great Fire of 1910. Also known as the “Big Burn,” “Big Blowup” or “Devil’s Broom,” it remains one of the largest recorded wildfires in U.S. history. Firefighters of this era tackled fast-moving forest infernos using basic hand tools like shovels, crosscut saws and early axes. The immense destruction of the 1910 fire led the U.S. Forest Service to adapt aggressive fire-suppression strategies, including a policy to attempt to put out all fires by 10 a.m. the day after they were reported.

🧵(1/3) NSW respiratory surveillance reports: 13 August 2026 Week ending 8 August 2026: 🔸COVID positivity rate: 3.6% (+0.2%) 🔸Number of laboratories reporting COVID: 2 out of 4 🔹COVID: 926 (+6.1%) 🔹Influenza: 4,306 (+38.2%) 🔹RSV: 1,534 (-10.9%) Source: health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/c...
The image shows a official document header and initial summary text from the NSW Government.
At the very top right is the red NSW Government waratah logo next to the text "NSW GOVERNMENT". The main header is white text on a dark blue banner reading "NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report – week ending 8 August 2026", with a sub-link below it pointing to "www.health.nsw.gov.au/coronavirus".
Directly below the banner, a prominent rectangular text box states: "Influenza has increased to a high level of activity. COVID-19 is at a low level of activity. RSV is at a moderate level of activity."
The document continues down the page under two blue headings: "Summary" and "Data sources and methods". The body text beneath explains that influenza activity has increased while COVID-19 remains low and RSV remains moderate. It highly recommends influenza vaccinations and notes RSV vaccine availability for older adults. The final sections detail the data streaming methods NSW Health utilizes to track transmission metrics across the community.
The image presents a comprehensive data table from NSW Health tracking viral respiratory notifications in New South Wales for the week ending 8 August 2026.
At the top, an introductory interpretation statement notes a 6.1% weekly increase in COVID-19 notifications, a 38.2% spike in influenza cases, and a 10.9% drop in RSV.
The main matrix, "Table 1," is split into three core vertical columns: COVID, Influenza, and RSV. Each virus category contains two metrics: "Week ending 8 August 2026" and "Year to Date".
The horizontal rows segment these viral numbers across three specific demographics: Gender (Female and Male), Age Group (ranging from 0–4 up to 90+), and Local Health District of Residence (such as Central Coast, Northern Sydney, and Western Sydney). The bottom row displays the final totals for the week: 926 for COVID, 4,306 for Influenza, and 1,534 for RSV.
The image features "Figure 6," a stacked bar chart displaying weekly notifications for COVID-19, Influenza, and RSV in NSW from 1 February 2025 to 8 August 2026.
The data is separated into three distinct stacked vertical bar sub-graphs:
•	COVID-19 (top): Shows a prominent mid-2025 peak reaching over 4,000 weekly notifications, followed by a lower, steady wave through mid-2026 hovering around 1,000 notifications.
•	Influenza (middle): Features a color-coded legend detailing test types (Influenza - Type A, Type B, Type A&B, and untyped). It exhibits a strong winter 2025 peak near 8,000 cases and a sharp, recent upward spike in July–August 2026 approaching 4,500 cases.
•	RSV (bottom): Shows distinct cyclical winter peaks, climbing to over 3,000 notifications in June 2025 and rising to nearly 3,000 weekly notifications around June–July 2026 before trailing downward.
Each sub-graph tracks "Weekly notifications" on its y-axis against "Test date" month intervals on its x-axis.
The image presents viral testing metrics from NSW sentinel laboratories, tracking data from 1 February 2025 to 9 August 2026.
At the top, an interpretation states COVID-19 test positivity increased to 3.6%, Influenza rose to 13.4%, and RSV decreased to 3.5%.
Below this is "Figure 13," a dual-axis chart showing "Number of positive tests" as light blue bars against a dark grey line representing "Percent positive (%)". The line shows a peak of 7.3% in July 2025, a low baseline through early 2026, and a gradual recent rise to 3.6% by August 2026.
The bottom section features "Table 2," broken down by week ending dates: 19 July, 26 July, 02 August, and 09 August. For the week ending 09 August, a red circle highlights a 3.6% positivity rate for SARS-CoV-2 (from 362 positive cases out of 10,181 PCR tests conducted). Another red circle in the final row highlights that only 2 laboratories reported data that week.

An excerpt from the NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report focusing on the "COVID-19 Wastewater Surveillance Program".
The text states that wastewater surveillance data is not being reported for the current week. It explains that this pause is due to ongoing changes being implemented for sampling, laboratory processing, and data analysis methods. The notice concludes by stating that reporting will resume once these revised methods are fully established and a sufficient amount of data has been collected.
