I'm not usually big on disguises but this year I tried my hand at a little DIY to pay respects to an important part of my childhood. #GrimFandango Happy #Halloween everyone!

I just dug into my archived #pico8 abandoned projects for fun and found this peculiar one. Titled "The Butler Did It", it's just a black background, a gloomy tune and a cartoonish butler moving exceedingly slow. It still feels like I had plans for this little guy, but what? #prototyping #gamedev

STRAFTAT also features an ungodly amount of maps, and finds strength in its design freedom, nailing bangers that other games never dared to think of. The result is a mountain of exciting and often hilarious content. Some maps may feel "a bit much", but that's what makes the set so great as a whole.

MarechalBanane @marechalbanane.bsky.social · 26/12/2024
Hell no! Actions are fluid and plethoric; the sliding and wall-jumps allow you to parkour your way around the maps and the many many disposable weapons offer a wide range of ludicrous playstyles and synergies, leading to an exhilarating feeling of power, precision and expressivity.

#1: STRAFTAT by @leonardlemaitre.bsky.social, @siriuslemaitre.bsky.social STRAFTAT ("criminal offence") is a 1v1 FPS that seemingly ran out of fucks to give a long time ago, with its low-poly models, minimum anims, and its brutalist, slavic Quake 3 / UT2000 aesthetic. Is it unpolished though?

Speaking of which, if you're interested in in-depth talks about UFO 50 and its games, I highly recommend listening to the @eggplantshow.bsky.social. They have a cool series where they take the games in order and focus on 1 per week. And they just released an interview of the devs, so check it out!
A screenshot of Attactics from UFO 50.
The game shows two castle walls (left red, right blue), on each side of the screen.
Between is a board full of grass where some blue units and red units are positioned : fighters, archers, shields, knights, etc. There is a countdown timer at the top of the screen reading "5".

I'll just say making a set of 50 games that are all that good and that produce such an original yet cohesive set is a tour de force. I think this game is important for the medium, as much as a reflection on itself as for pushing its boundaries and paving the way. It's a fascinating object of study.
A screenshot of Campanella 2 from UFO 50. Tiled 2d graphics. The pirate Isabella is holding a sci-fi pistol and has headphones on her head. She's in a cave where a very large statue of what appears to be some kind of otter is kneeling with purple boots on his hind legs. On the center of the image, text reads "10 star fragments opens the path, but also awakens the bile of old."

#2: UFO 50 by @mossmouth.bsky.social, @perryjon.bsky.social, @strotchy.bsky.social, @fourbitfriday.bsky.social, Paul Hubans, Ojiro Fumoto UFO 50 is colossal in content and depth, so I can't really start a serious conversation about it in this thread. But it's a huge load of fun and surprises!
A screenshot of Campanella from UFO50.
A small UFO is flying in a 2D space in a maze with enemies, bonuses and obstacles.

The tileset evokes a 70's diner. One of the obstacles is a salt shaker.

Animal Well is a joy to play. It's not linear; you can go anywhere from the start. It's not lazy; each puzzle has something new, and makes you feel smart, not stupid. It's not cumbersome; the control is precise and satisfying. Just running and jumping around keeps me entertained. It's just good!
110
MarechalBanane @marechalbanane.bsky.social · 20/12/2024
Animal Well is generous. The well is huge and filled to the brim with layers and layers of secrets that you will gradually learn to uncover as you dive deeper into the mechanics. I've combed through every inch a few times, and I barely completed the first two layers, out of god knows how many.

MarechalBanane @marechalbanane.bsky.social · 20/12/2024
Animal Well is clever. On the more puzzly side of the metroidvania spectrum, its few items and power-ups all offer several different uses, synergies and interactions that connect effortlessly with the world in a natural, logical way. "Oooooh masterclass" was a common exclamation while playing.

MarechalBanane @marechalbanane.bsky.social · 20/12/2024
Animal Well is beautiful. The dim, heavily-tinted lighting and the realistic-looking animals in an otherwise cute pixellated world conjure up an eerie atmosphere, like a lucid dream. The discreet but highly immersive sound design and the sparse tunes only underline the well's silence and vastness.

#3: Animal Well by Billy Basso (@animalwell.bsky.social) Being a solo dev is humbling, as the amount of skills required is crazy: dev, art, GD, music, writing, UI/UX, marketing/com, etc. So when people manage to nail a masterpiece in that context, I can't help but stare in awe.

Fun fact: I loved the game so much that upon discovering its speedrun community was small, I decided to speedrun it on any% with a friend. Lots of fun, highly accessible, still lots to explore, I'd recommend it to beginners and experienced runners alike. And as of today I'm still on the podium!
A screenshot of the official speedrun.com page of the game, showing the ranking of the any% category. The WR is 6m39s by no_meta_player, and I'm in 3rd place with 7m05s.

What's more, the core gameplay is actually pretty good. Handling the pan feels nice, especially with a mouse. Ingredient design and mechanics are top notch. And the soundtrack by Cameron Ginex is a banger. Putting it on is like entering a warm bath.
A screenshot of Arctic Eggs. A man is sitting on the left saying nothing while a man stands in the middle with heavy blue clothing, a bald face and glasses. Next to him, speech text is displayed in white: "I wish they would invent a toilet that doesnt whisper sweet nothings in your ear". The background is grey-purple-ish and foggy, with a few snow flakes here and there.

#4: Arctic Eggs by @thewatermuseum.bsky.social, cockydoody, abmarnie, Cameron Ginex Arctic Eggs is deliciously weird and its absurd writing too is a delicacy. Playing it is like watching Blade Runner, but everyone is half-replicant and hungry for eggs. You really should try it.
A screenshot of Arctic Eggs. The player is holding a pan in 1st person view, frying what appears to be a dozen cigarettes. Next to him a person with light hair, heavy white clothing is watching the pan. The background is foggy and blue. All textures in the image are very low-res and pixellated and all models are low-poly, evoking PS1/PS2 era games.

The sense of wonder that comes with organically discovering the toys and the possibilities they bring, and then making your own little tapes is incomparable. It's only matched by my childhood sessions of Mario Paint on SNES, and that was a LOT of time ago.

#7: Balatro by @localthunk.bsky.social Well, no need to introduce this multi-awarded and acclaimed poker deckbuilder. A labour of love, original, generous and intensely satisfying to play. I'm amazed at how balanced it feels despite the fact your goal is to break the game and achieve crazy points.
A screenshot of the balatro game. On the left can be seen an elaborate UI with the current score objective, points and money of the player. On the bottom is the player's hand, on top are a row of colorful and very different jokers, and in the middle the current played hand (a simple pair of 4).

Now that we have scales on maps in #picoguessr, we can add distance indications to direction signs. It makes them a bigger hint than before, but they're also: - easier to understand and learn - more interesting to use - imprecise and time-consuming enough not to be OP #pico8 #indiegame #gamedev

#8: No Case Should Remain Unsolved by @indiesomi.bsky.social Just discovered it, played through it in an evening, loved it. It's an awesome investigation puzzle game, with powerful writing, original by its use of misrememberance as a central mechanic, and a true breath of fresh air.
A screenshot of the game. We see an interface with columns of text (one per character), and underneath a list of police interview fragments. In the middle, a picture of a man thinking, head in hand, with a saddened expression. On the right, the following dialogue is shown:

"You're turning yourself in?
- Yes, I would like to surrender to the police. I am responsible."

To me this game really captures the joy of creating goofy videos with friends, and provides great tools for doing so. The inability to edit the footage is pure comedic genius, and accessories like the sound player, green screen and such hit the right possibilities/constraints ratio.

#10: Pacific Drive by @ironwood.bsky.social Nothing better than driving an old pickup alone at night through country roads, under heavy rain, with a flat tire, rock-folk music on the radio and X-Files-y anomalies everywhere outside. I love chill/weird driving games, and this game NAILED the vibe.

Today on #picoguessr I'm reworking the campaign screen. Now the background is a postcard. It helps preventing confusion with the in-game map and serves the mode's narrative of being a globe-trotter. I think I like it better this way. #pico8 #indiegame #gamedev

On #picoguessr, my previous version of the level selection screen confused players because it used the in-game map as background. People thought they would start their level where it was pinpointed on the map, which makes no sense for a location-guessing game.

Playtest for #picoguessr has shown that people initially struggled with getting a sense of scale as the world in picoguessr is, well, quite different from google street view. So I just added a scale (and also the north indicator) on the map. Hope that'll help. #indiegame #gamedev #pico8
