I love my location here in Iowa too. Within five minutes walk I have: a grocery store, brewery, wine bar, four decent restaurants, an independent book store, a post office, 2 playgrounds, hospital, police station. 10 more minutes walking gets me to kid's school.

I hope that at least some of them have an iota of conscience left and feel the appropriate level shame that should follow them around for the rest of their lives.

The >50 fraternity members who saw those snapchat messages and did nothing are possibly even more concerning than the failure of Cornell. What absolute monsters.

Over the past two years, I4R partnered with Psychological Science (@psychscience.bsky.social) on a large reproducibility project. 67 independent teams reproduced 64 articles published in 2024–2025, about 44% of eligible papers. Paper: www.econstor.eu/bitstream/10... Here's what we learned 🧵

Best case scenario: AI causes immense social upheaval via mass unemployment. Worst case scenario: AI kills us all. Politicians: Let's talk about trans people in sport. Fuck AI.

Just reviewed another psych paper with complex analysis, open data & R code - and appallingly bad variable measurement. I do wish psych PhD programs would spend more time teaching methods (e.g., measurement, design, sampling) and a little less time teaching arcane statistical tools & coding.

You can get a lot of media attention for your work if you artificially create four groups out of a continuous variable, use two strongly confounded IVs, and inappropriately use mediators as control variables. bjsm.bmj.com/content/earl...

Not sure if this is much more than "when I like someone at work I describe them as safe, having humility, and being effective at their job" i.e., some sort of general halo rating effect.

This is interesting. You get assigned to being born at a random place and time in history, to see what a typical person's life might have been like then. Unfortunately I was born in 1403 in the valley of Mexico and died at age 4 from dysentery.

Dan Ariely has apparently been at Duke since 2008. I hope that the Dean of the B-school there gets someone with data forensics chops to do a complete audit of all the data for papers produced during his tenure there.

Why are the "elite" private universities so awash with incompetence, fraud, and just plain awfulness (e.g., the Darthmouth scandal) among its psychology faculty? It's almost as if hiring from the ranks of the TEDTalk givers is not the best strategy.

Amazing work. I wonder if some of the negative coefficients in the regression model could be a case of negative suppression. Can easily happen when IVs are highly correlated.

Have criminal charges ever been filed against a researcher for stuff like this? It strikes me as horrific fraud on other researchers, the public, the employer, and funding agencies - as well as doing great damage to the public's trust in science. How Ariely still has a job is completely beyond me.

The structure of group task performance-A second look at "collective intelligence": Comment on Woolley et al. (2010) - PubMed
Collective intelligence has been described as a general factor that "explains a group's performance on a wide variety of tasks" (Woolley, Chabris, Pentland, Hashmi, & Malone, 2010, p. 686), much like the general intelligence factor explains individuals' performance on cognitive ability tasks. Th …

I'll add one more. The Woolley et al. Science paper on "collective intelligence" is entirely based on a fundamental misunderstanding of factor analysis (and a failure to screen their data). That paper is pretty much the sole reason for an annual conference that has occurred for the past 14 years.

Angela Duckworth's clams about "Grit" - based on misunderstandings of factor analysis, odds ratios, measurement principles, and effect sizes. The level of incompetence still leaves my flabbers gasted - particularly since it sparked the whole "grit" movement in education. So many $$$ wasted.
