I'm guessing he's talking about the auto start-stop feature on new cars. It turns off the engine when you come to a full stop, and then restarts when you release the break. This is annoying to many people because it saves gas, so must be bad, right?

ICYMI, "voted on Thursday to inscribe President Trump’s name on the building" in other words, CARVE the inscription into the marble facing. They're upping the ante to raise a middle finger at the judge. Also, to make it much more difficult and expensive to remove (again).

FWIW, I've always thought of Louisiana as being some sort of alternate reality. I don't pretend to know the state, or its politics (e.g. Huey Long), but it has never seemed all that rational of a political market. Some remarkable culture, some dark history, and some "colorful" character, for sure.

The original post shows vote preference in Mississippi. Senators John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy also were elected by the voters of Louisiana. Apparently the voters in Louisiana turn out for the Republican candidate.

Mike Johnson represents a single congressional district in Louisiana, not the entire state of Mississippi as this map indicates.

I am not one of those who believes that history repeats, but consider the following from Herodotus: the Oracle at Delphi told the fabulously wealthy King Croesus that if he invaded Persia he would "destroy a great empire." Croesus invaded and lost--the empire he destroyed was his own.

"Gone bad" as in soured? No prob. Fermented foods are (almost) never poisonous. In fact, we sometimes keep some "spoiled" milk on hand to use in pancake batter. "Gone bad" as in moldy? Not good. Moldy foods often have pathogenic organisms.

Sen Cassidy is not running for reelection. Let's hope he doesn't go all Senator Susan Collins this time. He *might* just vote to oppose the nomination. (That said, he does justifiably worry about threats to his and his family's well being. It's not just about votes anymore.)

2/2 Whereas Bryan was a true progressive who embraced policies we now take for granted. Anti-trust, progressive taxation, women's sufferage, and anti American imperialism. His embrace of antisciencific creationism climaxing with his embarrassing performance in the Scopes Trial, was clearly a mistake

1/2 While I fully agree that this excerpt accurately describes the current occupant of the White House, it should be noted that Mencken was an elitist known mostly for his curmudgeonly writings, tinted with antisemitism and racism.

For anyone who loves (or can't stand) Dickens "A Christmas Carol", I recommend taking time to watch this version. It was made to promote the United Nations, broadcast in 1964, and then lost for half a century. Written by Rod Serling. Remarkably relevant for our times. m.youtube.com/watch?v=QGaW...

The President Who Never Grew Up

Key: One "could watch his positions take shape from one rally to the next—an offhand comment that got a strong reaction would become a talking point at the next rally, and then a core part of his pitch. And he took notice when the crowd got bored, pivoting to the lines that would fire them back up."

Sort of. For “manifestly unlawful” orders, the legal duty is to disobey is to refuse to obey. Where things are less clear is for lower down the command chain and less obviously illegal orders. Excellent explainer in this piece by David French (former JAG). www.nytimes.com/2025/11/23/o... Gift Link

LLMs like ChatGPT should be thought of as tools. It's a bad idea to use a hammer to install a screw, but hammers *are* useful for driving nails. Also when using a LLM, check the work before submitting it. To extend the tool metaphor, measure twice, cut once. bsky.app/profile/gaff...

THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
November 9, 1968

Dear Messrs. Smothers:
I am very grateful for your kind and thoughtful letter.
To be genuinely funny at a time when the world is in crisis is a task that would tax the talents of a genius; to be consistently fair when standards of fair play are constantly questioned demands the wisdom of a saint.
It is part of the price of leadership of this great and free nation to be the target of clever satirists.
You have given the gift of laughter to our people.
May we never grow so somber or self-important that we fall to appreciate the humor in our lives.
If ever an Emmy is awarded for graciousness I will cast my vote for you.

Sincerely,
Lyndon B. Johnson
