PEPFAR was one good program Trump and DOGE and Elon failed to destroy. Despite trying, congress continued to fund it at historic levels (~$5-7B a year). It shows congress is complicit in every other cut they achieved. Because of PEPFAR, 8 million babies born HIV-free. www.kff.org/global-healt...

Love this statistic: "99.9% of all US businesses are small businesses." and "83% of all small businesses have no employees." Every politician's statement about helping "hardworking americans" and "small businesses" can mean nothing. At least nothing like you think it means.

The fact that Republicans are accusing Ukraine of interfering with US elections by attacking a MOSCOW, RUSSIA data center kinda says it all, doesn't it? Republicans are traitors. Zelenksyy just pulled a W we can't even fathom yet. #OperationQuietPiggy #SlavaUkraini ✊🇺🇦

If @anonymous knew these were key pieces in the information age wars, why can't cyber attacks be effective against them everyday? Just asking as a curious pro-democracy bystander.

Ukraine took out 2 huge data centers, and just like that--POOF! Pro-Trump/MAGA posts on US social media plummeted. Same happened to posts boosting Germany's far-right AfD. The primary function of those Bots is to boost groups Putin believes will destabilize the west. #USDemocracy #Voices4Victory

As a Panthers fan, I remember. I was there. I voted for the other options. Reapers would have been awesome. Even Lynx. I'd accept Tarheels, because it would be unique... but on social media there are always like 5 Panthers sports teams to disambiguate.

Is this the new moderate? And the current GOP candidate for Governor of Colorado just said he'd have his opponent executed by hanging, just because he disagrees with him.

There was a race in India some years back between Einstein and Hitler. This is a global game of telephone. Somebody hears about a powerful leader and takes the name, not knowing any more.

I think DATA was probably one of the few interesting attempts to explore AI. It obviously came along with some weird internal prompt engineering (obsessed with becoming more human), but I enjoyed watching the journey. Wesley, we can agree, was some producer's bad idea

The "political spectrum" changes over time, differs from one country to the next (but not entirely), and is generally not a great measuring stick to compare ideas across centuries.

Has anyone else noticed that too many sci-fi writers embrace petty despots in their distant future imagined worlds? If anything, systems get more complex over time and it's less likely a lone ruler can be individually responsible. We should crave more stories about systemetic evils.

Pew's Political Types would not support this. A lot of people swing around the center, and it isn't stable, and they're less ideological in general, making them harder for ideologues to influence.

I visited Russia in 1991, and I would say, even then, regular people were far less well informed about the world than Americans were. But since the Internet began, Americans have closed that "ignorance gap"

I would love to write a Trump biography that only tracks his life choices of (a) accepting/giving bribes vs (b) his snobbery for stuff or any other value he might have. It would be revealing how lust for power cuts against anything he might ever have been.

Case in point: The amount of money the big 5 AI companies spent on R&D this year alone (2026) would have been more than enough to end poverty worldwide, at least for this year.

This is the quote that convinced me this guy is for real. A lot of politicians parrot their parties oft-repeated cliches, but real leaders drive new insights and framing out of the old

He seems a little above average at evading sacks, given their below average line play as of late. I'll take that. He's also so much more accurate than Cam ever was, who finish with a career success rate below 60%.

This reddit comment (about the book) from 14 years ago was totally on point: Thomas Friedman is the perfect example of what Yasheng Huang hilariously calls an "airportologist" - Westerners who draw sweeping conclusions about countries seemingly on the basis of their airport terminals.

Marc Maxmeister @marcmaxmeister.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
When I think of best selling Airport terminal books that were completely naive/wrong: Thomas Friedman's "The World is Flat" comes up. The book completely failed to recognize all of the economic forces that gave us Brexit, MAGA, and caste of discarded workers - the ignored work force.

What's the deal with New York State zip3 code randomness? According to google search AI, the USPS assigned numbers sequentially along historic railway and highway mail routes radiating out from New York City and Albany, rather than in a strict geographical grid.

I've been saying this since 2016. If an elected leader speaks from a podium, that's no news. Context is news. Consequences of actions are news. Laws are news. Chatter is a distraction.

I think he deliberately "doesn't get it" in order to confuse the public and blur the lines until people believe there is no existing mechanism that supports people and provides services. Then everything can be private. (not Trump's plan; it is what his Nerd Reich handlers want)

DOGE succeeded wildly in executing Project2025. USAID got killed. And then most of OECD countries cut THEIR funding to match, because they were just doing it out of pressure from the US, it turns out. It can be reversed, but the harm done already is huge.

Interesting... the NRA gets categorized as "Crime & Legal-Related" in the national taxonomy (NTEE) of nonprofit cause areas. I think they enabled more than they've prevented, but that's only based on looking at every other country. So I could be wrong.

Anyone remember this guy? "During the last 18 years of his life, he gave away ~$6.9 billion in 2025 dollars, almost 90 percent of his fortune, to charities, foundations and universities. Called on the rich to do the same, and supported progressive taxation & the estate tax."

Luckily for America's future, just about every person who's lived under a dictator knows full well the people and the government of a nation are totally unconnected. Only Americans insult the people other nations when their governments suck. We gotta unlearn this ourselves.
