Spent last week on a study trip to Colombia. Learned a great deal about organised crime and the geopolitics of the region. But most importantly, I met this little guy. And he was pretty big, especially considering that he just roams around a university campus. I think he looks so cool

Germany's Social Democrats (SPD), once a mighty force, could soon poll behind AfD, Christian Democrats, Greens and the Left Party. A sad decline for a party that has done much for modern Germany.

It's not 100% certain yet, but it looks as if the Christian Democrats (CDU) have lost the election in Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania so badly that they'll be kicked out of parliament. It's a massive humiliation for Germany's last remaining "Volkspartei." Under 5%!

My friend Micah Reddy, a journalist with dual South African and British nationality, has gone missing while working on a story in Djibouti. If you know anyone in Djibouti who might be able to help, please get in touch. If not, please share this post so more people find out about Micah. It's urgent.

Podcast out tomorrow. But if you're interested in espionage and/or the Cold War, do get a copy of the book. I just edited the episode, and it's just an insane story. Also, I love the cover

I'm amazed that Michael "Fly to Moscow to Talk to Putin on the Phone" Kretschmer is somehow still Minister-President of Saxony. Angela Merkel, who has given dozens and dozens of interviews and has written an absolute tome of a book, has somehow found it impossible to even admit her mistake

In an alternative universe, Manuela Schwesig would've resigned on 25 February 2022. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who famously complained about NATO's "sabre-rattling" when it held an exercise in Poland, would've resigned

Putin's fear is extremely common in dictators and it's completely rational. When dictators lose wars they often lose power. And when they lose power, they often lose their freedom or even their life. Tyranny is hazardous!

It's not a meme, I genuinely think we are becoming illiterate again. Look at this chart, it's insane. Almost 5 hours per day, scrolling through videos - maybe writing a few text messages. And that's the average (!!!)

Insane statistic: In 2025, China increased its electricity generation by almost 500 terawatt-hours (TWh). That's the equivalent of the entirety of Germany's grid added to China's electricity system in just one year.

Lastly, we need more big statues. For these we should wait until people are dead just in case. But yes, the BioNTech couple that came up with the COVID vaccine, for example, they should have a statue. Maybe not quite this size, but they should get like half a Bismarck

The latest poll for Saxony-Anhalt has the far-right at 41%. If some of the smaller parties (SPD, Greens, BSW) don't clear the threshold to enter parliament, the far-right may gain an absolute majority in September.

My previous (uninformed) opinion has collided with reality / someone who knows what they're talking about. Here's the revolutionary new concept: It's an armoured vehicle on tracks with one or more large guns AND drone interceptors. Any similarities to previous weapon systems are purely coincidental

Marcel Dirsus @marceldirsus.com · 03/08/2026
Saw a video about these Ukrainian drone interceptors yesterday and it makes me wonder whether we'll eventually end up in a situation in which all the drones basically "cancel" each other

But as soon as people have concrete benefits from adopting lower emissions technology, everything is possible. Some of the solar expansion rates are insane! And with the amount of money flowing about, I'm sure technology will drastically improve very very quickly. Money rules

I'm a lot more optimistic. The way I see it, we've now reached a point at which people left, right and centre are converging on renewable energy simply because it's cheaper and everyone likes money. Texas produces more wind energy than any other American state. Look at this chart:

It gets a lot easier to deal with stuff like this once you realise that almost everyone involved has an economic incentive to play their role. A newspaper publishes something outrageous because they know it gets clicks. The columnist writes it because he knows clicks lead to money.

In hindsight it's easy to see that the War on Terror went completely off the rails, but I think there's also now a tendency to minimise the threat at the time. Look at this insane photo from the 1998 Al-Qaeda bombing in Nairobi. 200+ dead, thousands (!) injured

None of us know what's going on inside Xi Jinping's head, so this might well be the way he looks at the Iran War. But he could also conclude that the United States is unlikely to risk war with China because it is hugely vulnerable to casualties and rising gas prices. Plus, it doesn't have the ammo

The best example of this to me are the Greens. In 2021, one of their election posters literally said "no weapons and military equipment to war zones." Less than a year later, Russia had invaded Ukraine (again) and the Greens became one of the strongest supporters of sending weapons to Ukraine
