Denise snapped this truck on the A303. I wonder how many truck and van posts we have had in the last 8 years - there's a tagging job for someone to volunteer.

Rollo spotted this globe topped walking stick in a shop, he clicked a quick ic and only realised when he had walked on that it was a bit blurry.

Reinder Storm Reinder spotted this wall decoration in an Italian restaurant ‘La Piazzetta di Lauro’ in The Hague. He recommends the restaurant as well!

Elizabeth spotted this label on a recycled fabric shopping bag.

Reinder Storm Another stunning globe from Reinder's visit to the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome

Ken was in Brno for the EuroCarto 2026 International Cartographic Association event. He spotted this neat map of Italy on the wall outside and Italian delicatessen.

Reinder Storm Reinder saw this in the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome, Italy. A beautiful object in a quite stunning library. See

@4Estone@mapstodon.space Sylvain Pierre said "Really nice cover for last "We Demain" issue. Artwork from Enki Bilal"

Another one from Paul Hardy - I think this one is magnificent.

Berl Goldbart Berl shared this pic of his beer glass when he was last at Lords. Can't really argue with the sentiment after the summer we've had!

Paul Hardy Paul said "Mappy objects seen around Glencoe in Scotland. Note that General Roy went on to found the Ordnance Survey as the national mapping agency of Britain.

@rjhale1971@fosstodon.org Randall Hale said "In 1987 I apparently got a board game. Never played it for some reason." Maybe you weren't interested in global domination?

David Edmondson David said "Having found Mappery via a teapot I had a look on the map of maps and thought the Mappa Mundi at Hereford Cathedral might be a good addition" I have to wonder how David found us via a teapot, sounds like a story. We may have had a Mappa Mundi pic in the past but no harm in reminding ourselves what a marvel this is.

Reinder Storm Reinder said "In the Dutch Waterline Museum at Fort Vechten, a quite large scale model sheds light on how this huge defense construction in the Netherlands worked (between 1870 and 1945). Children really thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to play and explore the intriguing constellations. Very spectacular indeed. For when used properly, it actually really works." See and

@kennethfield.bsky.social Ken said "Oh... I didn't know about this exhibition. It's over now but glad there's an online version "

@christiannolle@mastodon.cloud Christian said "Prints from airlineatlas.com look like this when framed. Here in A2 on Hahnemuhle paper."

@kennethfield.bsky.social "It's a Map in the Wild but I'm not sure a telecom company wants to be advertising such a disconnected set of services as part of their disjointed and separated network!"

A bit of site news With a lot of help from Claude I have categorised all 2,400 posts on Mappery and have added a Categories menu that shows all the posts in the category. Some posts have more than one category and I confess that the choice of categories may not always make sense to you, it did to me when I was doing this!

@lecartographe.bsky.social I have no idea where Le Cartographe spotted this, I'll update if he lets me know. I just love the combination of the old map with the musical instruments.

@julietjfall.bsky.social Juliet said "Beginning of exams for some of our geography students today, so rocking my new map dress with its epically-rubbish projection. Why yes, dear students, of course Greenland is bigger than South America!" #sewing #maps #mercator

@kennethfield.bsky.social "Nice graphic thumbnail in this week's Sunday Times." Anything that Tim Marshall writes is worth reading.

@cartonaut.bsky.social "Cartovan pleasure! Elevation lines as decorative panel on adventure van" I wonder where those elevation lines are from? Looks like the van was built/decorated by

@kennethfield.bsky.socialKen said "Quite like this mappy illustration as part of an article In The Times"

I recently posted about the build of my "A Pint Near Me" app. When I had finished the build I asked Claude "Can you give me a few interesting stats from the pubs data?" The most 5 common names? How many single name pubs (ie not repeated)? Any regional patterns in naming? Anything else? Pause for a minute and see if you can guess the answers, maybe have a…

This is a genuine pub finder map with 50,000 pub points (mainly OSM). It still includes the pub density choropleth from my 1st pub map but the focus has changed. The main challenges were the data pipeline merging OSM and FHRS data and building a fast and intuitive search.

Reinder said "Obviously this olive oil comes from Greece." Not sure what the map adds to the marketing of the oil but there you go!

@jjimenezshaw@mapstodon.space So this is a genuine 8th birthday post, I already mis-posted a while ago and thank Arnaud my co-editor and partner in crime and all the people like Javier who contribute Maps in the Wild so I am not going to go through all of that again. Thanks. Javier spotted someone wearing this t-shirt. How many people want one? Should I add a version to the Mappery shop?

Reinder (again!) sent this "Presented on a textile with typical Indonesian traditional #batik decoration technique. Saw this one in an anabaptist church in Utrecht, Netherlands"

On the way back while hiking in Belledonne I found this nice compass on the pickup.

Walter Schwartz sent this "This is a copy of the surviving fragment of Ottoman Admiral Piri Reis’s 1513 map of the world.

This morning hike was in Belledonne. So here is the OS flask, sorry still empty, at the “Pas de la Coche” - 2000 meters.

Another one from Reinder. "In Holwerd (in the Dutch province of Friesland) one takes the ferry to the island of Ameland. This sign at the ferry take-off offices explains a thing or two about local geography, nature, history, the environment etc. The globe is ‘dynamic’: it can be turned in either direction."

One of the exhibitions I wanted to visit at Arles 2026 was the Anonymous project Being there. Being There recontextualises 1950s and 1960s North American family photographs by inserting Omar Victor Diop into these historically segregated, seemingly idyllic scenes. By disrupting the visual narrative of unbroken happiness, artists Lee Shulman and Diop expose historical exclusions and the isolation of race and class. The original image captures a family posing in front of the iconic Unisphere at the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair.

After the early morning, the natural French behaviour is to look for a bakery and a nice croissant; the closest bakery was in Saint-Pierre de Chartreuse, where I found this beautiful compass and a sign for orientation on the main square.

We are talking thrift shops here. Reinder answered the question. "In the thrift shop in Harlingen, this map explains where in Friesland one finds other branches of the company."

I took the OS Flask for an early hike at the top of the Charmant Som. The sun was about to set, and there were a lot of people around; never mind, they could witness that the flask was empty as the wind kept blowing it down.

Reinder shared this "… the information on this panel sign concerns the Dutch province of Friesland. The content is presented in a cartographically Friesland-shaped kind of form. The sign is photographed by yours truly in the very tiny village of Firdgum (60 odd inhabitants)."

This is th second Amazing Animals map after the IUCN asked me to take down the original version using their polygon data. This map has data on 388 species and is based on 750,000 observations/occurrences from the GBIF database. It took a lot of testing and exploration to come up with a way to present the data. In code terms Claude did everything, but in design and direction I was in the driving seat.

Professor Frank McDonagh shared this "Plaque the Apollo 11 astronauts left on the moon."

Ainsley S said "New map projection just dropped"

Ken said "Artsy #mapsinthewild 'globe'. Lines of longitude seem faithful, but I'm sure some folks would be aghast about those latitude lines being all over the place." It's art in'it?

Happy 8th Birthday Mappery, quite a landmark for Arnaud and me, nearly 2,500 posts and 3,500 images and still going. Each year I try to find a special image to post for our birthday but this year I forgot, however I realised that this photo that Jeremy Morley sent me is a pretty good Map in the Wild for our birthday because there is no map!

Ken saw this and had to buy it. "Picked up this natty little pin the other day. Just look at all those inaccurate peas, and the shape of those landmasses. Alternatively - what a lovely little pin" I WANT

Mathew Edney visited the National Museum in Prague, Chzechia and shared some pics "Had a fun time exploring all the maps in Czechia's National Museum" There are some more pics on Matthew's blog

Joost Rekveld shared this "Cracked paint speculatively restructuring France."

Atanas Enchev sent me this "Clothing label for "Maps in the wild" consideration. The coordinates resolve to Brooklyn Borough Hall, New York City, which is a weird location to put on clothing, IMHO. I'm speculating that the label designer, in their desire to be cool, entered "Brooklyn coordinates" in a search engine and used whatever numbers the search engine spat out."

Mapas Milhaud posted "This stamp was issued in 1968 by the self-proclaimed Republic of Biafra and printed by the Lisbon Mint. It was part of a series of three stamps of varying denominations commemorating Biafra's declaration of independence on May 30, 1967, and with which it also sought to extend its limited international recognition." The Independent Republic of Biafra lasted until January, 1970.

Xenofact posted this on mastodon and I felt I had to reshare "Excremeditation - The powerful act of joining with the universe via bowel movements. There are many forms of this divine meditation, but all involve powerful direct Slackful contact with reality by taking a shit. It’s not “not giving a shit,” but “giving a shit freely.” Connects you to the cycle of life. There are many, many variants of it and all are worth exploring."

I think we have had a picture of the Schropp shop previously. But if you run a shop dedicated to maps in Berlin and you operate this cute little 3 wheeler van with a globe on top then I think you deserve another entry. This pic came from Ed Freyfogle.
