(& just realized while CHIP is a fairly universal acronym, HIP is just Healthy Indiana Plan)

You know states handle a lot of Medicaid, right? So many experiences in Indiana might be different than in other states. And you might find that Medicaid experiences for CHIP differ from those of adults, and from adults on HIP.

Yes. But this was using braces (often cosmetic) as the argument. We’re so far from that being the biggest issue for most people. It is AN issue - I knew people with severe congenital jaw issues that required braces who couldn’t get them as a kid b/c of $$$ - but basic care is still hard to get.

It is a problem. And using healthcare for dinner, a movie, and some attention when you’re not sick is actually really bad.

I disagree. When people suddenly have access to affordable healthcare, they definitely use more healthcare. I knew some people that went to the ER in hopes of getting admitted so they could get doted on by nurses and free meals. So… MAYBE if wages increased & we had enough mental health coverage…

You mean Medicare? Only federally funded medical centers with annual staff turnover take Medicaid much anymore.

Alison @mapsanddata.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I mean, braces are expensive and can be critical care, but… Medicaid reimbursements are so low that only 1 dentist in our state takes Medicaid for root canals, and people on private insurance get teeth pulled b/c copays are so high for anything else. Braces for cosmetic reasons? Maybe later.

Sounds like a great idea for a low-budget play to offer up in every civic theater around, not as a $100 million plus movie.

No. The challenge is to stop letting ultra-competitive folks run the world into an uninhabitable place because of artificial goals. (The jet set routinely makes my backyard smell like jet exhaust, just so they can see football games at an “elite” university in my city.)

My son was told about affirmative consent his entire life, so much so that I was wrestling with the cat which was growling at me (not seriously and she was a cat who growled when she was playing also when she ate food) and my toddler son told me that the cat said no. That shit's not hard to teach.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Well, SCOTUS did declare several years ago that shareholder profits must be maximized, so workers must be swapped to part time non-benefits-eligible positions or subcontractors if at all possible, so long as it’s legal.

We should study data-center heat, but we can also use it. In Finland, waste heat from data centers is captured and fed into district-heating systems to warm homes and businesses. One major project is expected to supply about 40% of local heating demand. Instead of dumping the heat, use it.

How did you get home? I don’t mean the field, I mean there isn’t a public phone for 5 miles in any direction, but there is a gas station down the street where a cop killed a woman in a mental health crisis last week, and that’s related to why I can’t foster teens anymore.

I can’t give my kids a quarter to call for a ride, I have to either pay for a phone plan or count on the kindness of strangers, and often they can’t comply because when the school bus gets cancelled after practice, the coach can’t share her phone with 26 kids when she needs to pick up her own

I’m also going with schools. In don’t remember being late for school very often. My kid’s bus is routinely 1/2 hour late or cancelled. The nationwide shortage of school bus drivers has been going on for years and for those parents who are reliant, or who have given up and do drop off, it’s awful
