likely the only time I will directly weigh in on the ai debacle, and I hope it's worth the read: a brief defense of the inherent humanity of art, the inherent beauty of being human, art as more than just a technical feat, and why you should believe in yourself

it troubles me how little anyone is talking about what human beings CAN do intellectually, in addition to what ai CAN'T do technically. art is not just a cold process of making lines and shading and textures for the fuck of it. the reason art is so beautiful is because all of those techniques are utilized skillfully and for a purpose. we have these beautiful worlds of feelings and ideas and we get to express them in interesting and thought-provoking ways.

"I only use ai for brainstorming" ai steals and amalgamates other peoples' work without understanding it. then you use that empty, bastardized version of someone else's work as the basis for your own. this is appropriation at best, downright theft at worst. there is no skill, inspiration or artistic intent, it's just other people's work that the ai, and then you, thoughtlessly copied, stripped of its meaning, and rebranded as your own. let's not forget that the beauty in art is how it skillfully portrays the human experience and human ideas. inspiration is understanding what goes into something and feeling a strong sense of reverence for how each and every part of that thing is purposefully arranged to create something meaningful. this is not that.

"I only used ai for the boring parts / the parts I don't know how to do" if you don't have a reason to put something in your art then why are you putting it in?? if no meaning is going into it why are you making it?? if you have nothing meaningful to add to the conversation why are so insistent on blabbering so loudly?? and if you don't immediately know how to make something, guess what, that's where this magical thing called passion comes in. it usually kicks in when you're doing something that really means something to you. the fact that you're putting so little love in the process that you're willing to outsource it to something that doesn't feel tells me that making this does not, in fact, mean something to you.

I say all of this because I keep seeing people trying to excuse ai usage in hyperspecific scenarios, like if an indie developer can't afford to pay people. and my response would be, "why is it more important to you that someone is able to put out a finished but ultimately meaningless product devoid of artistic value, than it is for someone to develop a stronger reverence for the artist process itself and becoming better at articulating themselves anyway?" the game that I made recently had a budget of $0. I used piskel, fl studio with a bunch of free soundfonts, pixlr (which I used for photoshop but unfortunately they've begun drifting towards ai bullshit too, needless to say I didn't use it), and an outdated version of rpg maker 2003. and I did things that way specifically because I hated the doctrine that a work of art is only worth how technically impressive it is, regardless of how meaningful it is. it was unbelievably fulfilling to work on that project, BECAUSE it's a work of my own.

you have a rich internal experience, whether you choose to indulge it or not. I recommend that you do, rather than outsourcing it to something that doesn't have one and assuming that doing so can enrich your own. please, for the love of GOD, believe in yourself.
