Today marks 6 months since we launched our free footage platform, OpenJournalism.Network. From the very beginning of this project — back when we were using Canva-owned platforms — it's been very clear that there is a huge demand for the kind of footage we provide.

Gen Z was really proud of the impact of they had in the 2024 Bangladesh protests. One of the most memorable murals said: “The generation that watched Minions growing up changed the country” We wanted to help cover this historic moment. So we’ve published free-to-use (with attribution) footage.

Is this image offensive or inappropriate? Pixabay, a stock footage & photo library owned by Canva thought so. It's a still from a No Kings protest that we recorded in San Francisco. The clip focuses on a flag that says 'Abide No Hatred,' so we were surprised when Pixabay flagged it as offensive.

The way billionaire-owned social media companies are going, I think journalists/media/creators have to more proactively encourage audiences to spend at least part of their day being more active consumers, not exclusively passive. Changing behaviours is hard, but better to start sooner than later?
