Today marks 6 months since we launched our free footage platform, OpenJournalism.Network. From the very beginning of this project — back when we were using Canva-owned platforms — it's been very clear that there is a huge demand for the kind of footage we provide.

Octobers are a big month at InOldNews. Not only because it's my partner in crime's ( for all things work and life ❤️ ) birthday month. Last October, we put the openjournalism.network out in the world after extensive testing and revision.

Is this image offensive or inappropriate? Pixabay, a stock footage & photo library owned by Canva thought so. It's a still from a No Kings protest that we recorded in San Francisco. The clip focuses on a flag that says 'Abide No Hatred,' so we were surprised when Pixabay flagged it as offensive.
A flag that says 'Abide No Hatred' was incorrectly flagged as offensive and inappropriate.

There are must-reads and then there are must-dos. Anyone looking into AI for a potential newsreader product needs to try and replicate this first: theconversation.com/i-used-ai-ch... Language & region do affect "quality" of responses & that might make it an opportunity but also an immediate concern

I used AI chatbots as a source of news for a month, and they were unreliable and erroneous
When we ask for news, we should expect generative AI tools to stick to the facts. But new research shows they don’t.

In December 2025, a thick haze covered the Delhi National Capital Region. There was no visibility throughout the cities in the region. AQI monitors showed that particulate matter such as PM 2.5 was at hazardous levels — some of the worst pollution on record www.openjournalism.network/packages/vis...

New study finds bonobos can keep track of human voices and position, even when they’re out of sight. Researchers spent time playing hide and seek with a bonobo to uncover that bonobos are able to keep a tab on which human caretaker was where — even when they were out of sight.

Our co-founders @sanshey.inold.news and @manon.inold.news just wrapped a training on AI in Journalism in Nairobi. Over the course of the training, journalists tried out more than 10 tools. They explored how these tools can be used in written, audio, video and data formats.

Hi! Quick note: The Onion accidentally posted a stock photo from a vendor with an AI generated image in it. We pulled the post down once we found that out. Our commitment to not using AI is very real. It's in the union contract to disclose it if we ever do. World is a slop minefield and we're sorry.

A refreshing piece for my eyes tired of seeing "AI" & "Journalism" in the same headline. There are multiple forces trying to pull the rug from under our feet.

The hype around artificial intelligence (AI) for generating images & written content often overshadows the technology's incredible ability to reduce mundane tasks. In our latest documentary, @sanshey.inold.news & I explored AI’s applications in conservation: youtu.be/PrRxAK2VGjg

Blockchain and Fediverse are two attempts towards the same goal: a more open internet. We've already seen one of them fumble. So now I'm here to see how the other one goes.
