We argue that since the types of places labeled as unsafe differ so much - the central square with lots of people, lots of businesses and lots of crimes as opposed to the park with varying amounts of people, few businesses and crimes - interventions should be tailored to the type of location. 3/3

We also note that men and women, and old and very old (our sample is very old) people tend to point towards the same locations - and the same reasons. Social disorder is by far the most common reason stated for places being unsafe, with youth gangs being the most used specific label.

“What works?” is only the beginning. To improve investigative interviewing, we also need to ask: how, for whom, under what conditions, and at what cost? Our paper explores how EMMIE can help bridge research and practice. Open-access at: doi.org/10.1080/1561...

Tror det är en kombo av mkt av det som gjorts sista årtiondet. Min gissning är att den viktigaste enskilda åtgärden senaste åren är den diplomatiska offensiv som lett till att många ledare i kriminella nätverket blivit gripna i andra länder.

The drastic decline in Swedish gunviolence continues, with 0 dead and 1 wounded across the country in August. And while individual months can fluctuate, there is no doubt we have seen a large drop. 12 month average is at 2.5 and 1.9 respectively, compared to 12m mean of 9.3 & 5.4 in April 2022.

Just finished a review for Journal of Quantitative Criminology. Not sure if JQCor Springer Nature, but it was a joy to use the system. One click got me to a page where I could download all the material and submit - and it did not expire over time. Usually they expire so you end up having to log in.

The reviewers wanted more simulations, but I had done all the geographical processing manually. I pushed it up from 10 to 20 during revision, but more than that wasnt really realistic.. As a reviewer I do not believe I have encountered this.

What is known about “peer-review washing”? Cases in which editors invoke independent peer review as a mark of rigor, yet proceed with an R&R or publication despite serious weaknesses or clear red flags identified during review? How common is this, and what are people’s experiences with it?

One of my pet peeves is looking for country level explanations for global trends. I am no expert but I don't think Norway doing X in 2022 or France changing policy Y in 2019 can explain these global declines across a diverse set of countries.

In An0m, drug crimes were more connected to weapons crime, in Encrochat to violent crimes, whereas in Sky ECC to traficking. So the platform do differ a bit - or at least convictions do. 'Read more in the paper - open access at Crime Science link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Cases are fairly similar, but different from general convictions. They contain more drug crime and money laundering, but less theft and traffic crime. Drug crimes are central, but many cases involve multiple crimes, and the crimes connected to drug crimes vary across platforms. 3/

While this is just a small study of two small towns, many of the findings are similar to what has previously been shown in studies from Stockholm, Malmö and Uppsala. Swedish research is at the forefront on the geography of fear - and this will enable practitioners to target interventions much better

Respondents were also asked why the locations were unsafe, and here we consistently note for both towns, for both younger and older, and men and women, that youth gangs and drug-related activities were ranked the top reasons. This broadly matches with what typically is labeled as social disorder 5/

The last one is quite similar to the park however, so not sure whether they are two distinct locations yet. This was broadly similar among younger vs older parts of our sample, & men vs women, which we were a bit surprised to learn - women and men typically differ a lot in feelings of unsafety. 4/

Our findings point towards the existence of 3-4 different types of unsafe places. The central square (lots of people, lots of crime, lots of businesses), the open area/park (little crime and business, varying people), the poor area (medium everything) and possibly the youth venue like schools 3/

I made a small visualisation of the birthplace and nation represented of players at the World Cup. Stunning 96(!) players born in France. You can play with it here: claude.ai/public/artif...
Network diagram on a dark green background titled "The Birthplace Map: World Cup 2026 Squads," with the subtitle "node size = degree (players + countries connected)." Gold circles represent the 48 World Cup nations and smaller grey-green circles represent countries that only supplied players without fielding their own team, positioned roughly according to real-world geography (Americas on the left, Africa and Europe in the center, Asia and Oceania on the right). Curved green lines connect birth countries to the nations players represent, with thicker lines indicating more players. France is the largest node by far, connected to 15 countries totaling 76 players, including thick lines to Algeria, Haiti, Senegal, Congo DR, and Côte d'Ivoire. The Netherlands is the second-largest hub, with an especially thick line to Curaçao (26 players). Other notable hubs include Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco, and the United Kingdom (split into England and Scotland). A legend at the bottom explains the gold/grey node colors and the line-width scale; a footer credits the source as worldcup.csv, 1,248 squad entries, 282 cross-border players.
