Instant by Accident #Recover #PostProcess #ECK Challenge Photo original by @rjrock.bsky.social (See Alt-Text for process) Thinking: The damage was a real film/developing issue, so I leaned into it rather than fixing it. The other frames hint the roll had other, similar moments on it.

Process: Pretty simple this week, using ON1 I inverted the image (negative), adjusted tone etc, applied an instant film LUT, and then added some extra texture and refined the colour/tone balance.

Process: I created a python script to convert the image to ASCII. The program shrinks the photo into a grid of small blocks and, for each one, picks a text character whose shading matches how light or dark that spot is so sparse characters like a period for bright areas, dense ones like # for dark areas, so the character pattern recreates the image when viewed as a whole. On top of that, it looks for outlines (places where light suddenly meets dark, like the edge of a face or table) and figures out which way each outline is pointing: vertical, horizontal, or diagonal and then swaps in a character that matches, like | or /, so those edges actually look like lines running in the right direction rather than just fuzzy shading.

Thermal #Duotone #PostProcess #ECK Challenge Photo original by @rjrock.bsky.social (See Alt-Text for process) Thinking: I wanted to show that the city radiates heat and life and burns into the structure of the world and so I changed the original colours to highlight this.

Process: Starting from a standard duotone mapping deep red shadows with white highlights, I pushed the highlight clip aggressively so that the midtones surrounding the city blow out rather than graduate smoothly. The foreground river and sky edges read as overexposed, as if the thermal output of the buildings is the light source rather than the ambient blue hour. No additional compositing; the radial quality comes entirely from the tonal structure of the original shot, where the city sits centrally and the surrounding environment naturally occupies the lighter midtones.

Quietude #PostProcess #EmotionShift #ECK Challenge Photo original by @bloodraynes.bsky.social (See Alt-Text for process) Thinking: I wanted to shift the emotion to one of quiet prayer, calm, and with an air of stillness and contemplation.

Process: The starting point was thresholding the image in GIMP, using this as a creative base rather than a finishing technique. From there I painted out everything except the graves and spire, then cut and re-positioned the remaining elements. The spire shadow was reconstructed by cloning and rotating the original; a simple solution to re-establish the perspective geometry. Being self critical, getting the graves to sit convincingly with the re-positioned spire remains an imperfect compromise, but one I felt was acceptable. Final touches were a LUT and paper texture overlay, which added warmth and a material quality to the void rather than leaving it feeling purely digital.

Geological #PostProcess #Surface #ECK Challenge Photo original by @rjrock.bsky.social (See Alt-Text for process) Thinking: I wanted the surface to reflect the abstract geology of the rock and the effect of time.

Process: I wrote a small python program to process the image, attempting to replicate time, by treating pixels as sand, and iterating over time to shift the "sand" down. The code had a bug, which resulted in these pleasing geological surfaces, so I figured I would go with this instead!

Process: Using Gimp, for the grass, a hacky frequency separation, gaussian blur, then blended with differences, the hills I just adjusted the levels/contrast, I then merged grass and hills, masked in a new sky (ok, a bit of a cheat but there was zero detail in the sky and I felt it needed something). I then moved into ON1, sorted out brightness and contrast, giving some more back depth, and added a weird LUT to push it to insane colours.

Process: Quite basic this week, I made two images, one very bright, the other dark. In gimp I layered them with the darker image on top, I masked the sky and added a moon with birds, and then using a low opacity brush I painted through to the brighter image, revealing the city lights, exaggerating the "moonlight" on various structures.
