Helen Frankenthaler : Blue Territory, 1955 Oil & enamel on canvas 291.6 × 150.3 cm 114-3/16 × 59-3/16 in Whitney Museum This is an early example of her soak-stain technique, which transformed modern art and bridged the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Color Field painting. Much more 👇
Inspired by Jackson Pollock's method of pouring and dripping paint onto canvases laid flat on the studio floor, Frankenthaler took the process a step further. For Blue Territory, she thinned her oil and enamel paints with turpentine and poured them directly onto raw, unprimed canvas.

Instead of sitting on top of the surface as a thick layer of impasto, the diluted pigment soaked completely into the fabric. This uneven rate of absorption allowed her to create sweeping, watercolor-like swathes of deeply saturated color juxtaposed with diaphanous, translucent pools. The technique fused color and canvas into a singular, flattened entity, eliminating any illusion of traditional three-dimensional perspective.

The Story Behind the Title
Frankenthaler noted that she found titling her highly abstract pieces to be quite difficult. Rather than assigning rigid numbers or sentimental names, she preferred to title her artwork based on an image or mood that seemed to naturally emerge from the completed canvas. In the case of Blue Territory, the expansive, atmospheric washes of blue conjured a distinct geographical or atmospheric domain—what she described as an "abstract climate" of light, memory, and movement. The evocative title later inspired the mid-century poet Frank O'Hara to write a poem dedicated to it.

I started working on this one today as well. Suddenly, some organizational principles were presented to me. I've been staring at it for a long time. The goal is to resolve it while simultaneously retaining the challenges it presented. I have no idea what that means, though. It's a problem.

Wayne Thiebaud : Cut Meringues, 1961 Oil on canvas 16 x 20 in | 40.6 x 50.6 cm The Museum of Modern Art, New York
The Impasto Technique:
Thiebaud famously applied paint heavily using a palette knife and brushwork. In Cut Meringues, the physical texture of the thick oil paint mimics the literal, fluffy peaks and sugary density of actual pie meringue.

Halation (Color Edges):
Instead of outlining the pie slices in black, Thiebaud layered multiple vibrant, contrasting colors right against each other along the edges. This creates a shimmering, neon-like "halo" effect that makes the slices pop off the canvas.

Repetition and Order:
The painting features sliced meringue pies arranged in a clean, geometric grid. This mechanical presentation mirrors the mass production, commercial window displays, and diner culture of post-war America.

Relation to Pop Art:
While frequently grouped with the Pop Art movement due to his focus on mass-produced consumer goods, Thiebaud considered himself a traditional still-life painter. He focused heavily on the formal, nostalgic, and physical qualities of painting rather than just commercial critique.

"Still Life with Candles and Fruit" Shelli Finch - @stressart.bsky.social 24"x 18" mixed media on canvas
An abstract mixed-media painting utilizing a warm color palette of pink, orange, magenta, white, and tan showcases a highly textured composition divided into two main visual sections. On the left side, a row of ten elongated, vertical, finger-like shapes stretches from the upper edge downward, rendered in pale gray and white tones outlined with dark, sketchy black lines. The tips of several of these vertical forms are capped with small, abstract patches of light purple and magenta, while their bodies are heavily encrusted with patches of rough, sand-like tan texture that catch the light. Below these columns, the background transitions into a stormy blend of deep magenta, pink, and bright orange with additional patches of the gritty, textured tan material scattered near the bottom left corner, where a faint, white oval shape is loosely outlined. The right third of the canvas features a dense cluster of organic, circular, and oval shapes heavily outlined in thick white and dark borders, strongly resembling abstract faces or cut fruit. One prominent vertical oval contains a vibrant red center, while another form below it reveals sections of bold red and orange segments against a dark background, creating a stark, high-contrast focal point. The artist's dark signature and the year mark "'19" are clearly visible in the lower right corner over a patch of light pink and white paint.

By Nigerian-American artist Kehinde Wiley (born 1977), “Shantavia Beale II,” 2012, oil on canvas, 60x48 inches, private collection. #blackart #blackartist #blackartists #oilpainting #painting
A very regal 3/4 view portrait of a black woman with long upswept hair, seen from the waist up. Behind her and twining up her torso and arms are flowers and leaves. From the Saint Louis Art Museum: “Kehinde Wiley’s vibrant paintings actively engage with the traditions of European art. In his work, Wiley replaces historical depictions of white figures with images of contemporary African Americans, Africans, and people of the African diaspora. His work is widely recognized for calling attention to significant absences and erasures in Western art history, exposing the lack of representation of black individuals in figurative painting.”
