5. Ground it in the Mundane & Modern 🏙️ Talk about traffic, texting, awkward dates, office politics, or aging bodies. Use contemporary language. Senryu is the poetry of the everyday, the awkward, and the unglamorous. It doesn’t need to be pretty; it needs to be *real*.

If you can remove an adjective or a conjunction without losing the core image, delete it. Think of it as poetry in its underwear.

This is where the "human nature" element shines—often through humor, satire, or dark realism. 4. Ditch the 5-7-5 (But Keep the Brevity) ✂️ You are not bound by syllable counts. However, discipline is key. Aim for sparsity. Every word must earn its place.

3. Embrace the Twist or Irony 🔄 Senryu thrives on friction. Use juxtaposition to create a surprise, a wry smile, or a pang of recognition. The first two lines might set up an expectation; the last line subverts it.

2. Show, Don’t Tell (The Objective Correlative) 👁️* Avoid abstract emotional labels like "sadness," "anger," or "joy." Instead, show the *physical reality* that creates those feelings. ❌ *I felt so lonely.* ✅ *The TV anchor smiles at my empty chair.*

Here are 5 guidelines to keep your senryu sharp: 1. The Snapshot, Not the Story 📸 Capture *one* specific moment or observation. Don’t explain the backstory. Don’t narrate a timeline. Freeze-frame a single interaction, thought, or incident. If it takes more than one breath to read, cut it down.

🧵 Writing Gendai Senryu in English? Gendai (modern) Senryu isn’t just "haiku without nature." It’s a distinct art form focused on human nature, irony, and the raw edges of daily life. No 5-7-5 required. No seasonal words needed. Just truth, brevity, and a twist.
