My current display on the “Staff Picks” shelf at the creative reuse center I help run 🦉 #twinpeaks
A shelf full of items that relate to the show Twin Peaks. Coffee mug, donut, miniature Douglas firs, a queen of hearts playing card, an owl notebook and necklace, a postcard of Snoqualmie Falls, chess pieces and blue roses. All sitting on a zig zag fabric with a red curtain backdrop.

Been a bit since I posted, but starting a new job has taken over life and made quilting time harder to come by. Still makin it happen though! Here’s a study of Friendship Star and Snowballs made with @sherrilynnwood.bsky.social and the Improv That Block Squad, always made with T-shirts 🧶 #quiltsky
A colorful quilt study lies on a carpeted floor. The study is an improv with Friendship Stars and Snowballs. It’s made with t-shirts only and uses magenta, teal, neon green and navy blue.Stacks of Snowball quilt blocks and HSTs lie on my work table. The same quilt study on the floor, but this one has a Brown Boston Terrier for scale.

My #artistvsartist this year! There were some upcycling and mending projects as well, but mostly t-shirt quilts! 🧶 #quiltsky

It took a year, but I finished! This quilt was made for my friend who experienced a Bipolar 1 break that rocked our world. He’s doing well now, but there are still reverberations from that time. It was a reliable creative object to lean on throughout. More info in alt text about process! 🧶 #quiltsky
An art quilt hangs on a wood paneled wall. The quilt it made from t-shirts: white, black, and hand bleached. The blocks are improv Sawtooth Stars, in various states of explosion. Hundreds of red, metallic stitches hold the quilt together. There are sequins, beads, and pearls as added texture. The quilt is about 1’ x 3’ and it hangs from a bamboo rod by silver metal clips. The back of the quilt. I used a scrap of black fabric of unknown origin. The metallic, red stitches are obvious from this side. You can also see the metal rivets of the set pearls. I like this side, too.A side angle of the quilt. Many of the textural elements catch the light coming in through my basement window. A detailed shot of one of the stars, showing the variety of textural details. Metallic threads, sequins, seed beads, and set pearls. The diverse results of bleaching different black t-shirts is also apparent, with some deep orange, and others a barely faded brown.

Completed my third quilt! It was made during my improvisational quilting studies earlier this year where I used only t-shirts! This one tells an icy Lake Erie story: ice crashing, geese flying, and lake glass tumbling. I gifted it to my daughter on her 11th birthday 🧶 #quiltsky
A quilt covers a bed with soft light coming in through the window behind it.A colorful quilt made of t-shirts is spread out on my studio floor. The quilt includes a section of improv orange peels, and it surrounded by flying geese and tumbler blocks. A shot of the details of the corner of the quilt. A shot of the back of the quilt. The quilt was signed by embroidery saying, “👁️❤️U”

Kurt Vonnegut knew what was happening in 1985.
A paragraph in Kurt Vonnegut’s 1985 novel Galápagos. It reads, “”You, *Doctor Hiroguchi,” she went on, “think that everybody but yourself is just taking up space on this planet, and we make too much noise and waste valuable natural resources and have too many children and leave garbage around. So it would be a much nicer place if the few stupid services we are able to perform for the likes of you were taken over by machinery. That wonderful Mandarax you’re scratching your ear with now: what is that but an excuse for a mean-spirited egomaniac never to pay or even thank any human being with a knowledge of languages or mathematics or history or medicine or literature or ikebana or anything?””

Feeling proud of the quilts I’ve made the past six months in my “Improv That Block” workshop with @sherrilynnwood.bsky.social I couldn’t have imagined I would create these functional pieces of art and now I can’t stop! I used only t-shirts and they are as snuggly as you imagine! 🧶 #quiltsky
A picture collage of six improvisational quilts. The quilt blocks that are improved are (from L to R) Tumbler, Spiderweb, Orange Peel, Snowball, Hourglass, and Bricks. These were all made used t-shirts mostly from my collection and supplemented with thrift store finds.

Staining the bathroom sink at home like real punk rock girls. Also I think I was subconsciously inspired by my paint by number when planning out these colors?
A young person looks to the wall to show off the back of their new hairdo. I cut and colored it at home, I am not a professional but I’m proud! The bob features layers of hot pink, orange, and purple. The new hairdo is being compared to the paint by number of Zion that I just finished. The layers of colors are markedly similar and was not really planned, just the colors we happened to have at the house.

Hourglass improv complete! This one is an homage to the tie-dye of my teen years and how that doesn’t seem very long ago and also a lifetime ago all at once? Time is weird! Made with only t-shirts from my collection 🧶 #quiltsky
A quilt top lies on my studio floor. There is a brown Boston terrier lying near the middle and looking at the viewer. This is an improvisational quilt using the Hourglass Block as the riff. I used black and various tie-dye t-shirts as the fabric to form the high contrast hourglass shapes in various scales and arrangements.

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the tie-dyed t-shirts of my teen years 🧶 #quiltsky #tiedye #tshirts
A series of hourglass blocks made from t-shirts lay in an improv pattern on my studio floor. The blocks are still unseen. There are two “colors” at play: black and various tie-dye color ways. I played with scale and aimed for three sizes to fit together in various ways.

Still need to figure out its final form, but I love the little pop art pup quilt I made during a workshop with @iothealien.com! All new techniques for me and of course I just used what was on hand, including vintage daisy printed fabrics and my daughter’s tattered sweater for batting! #quiltsky 🧶
A small quilt lies on a white surface. It has been quilted but the edge still is needs binding. The main fabric is a vintage yellow daisy print. In the center is an appliquéd patch of my brown Boston terrier’s face. There are a variety of fabric colors used to create the shapes and contours of her face, all different Daisy themed fabrics as well. A cropped shot of the main details of the quilt. An even closer up shot of the appliqué details and the straight line quilting. A shot of the quilt on my sewing machine during quilting. The edge of the quilt is turned up to reveal a tattered cheap pink sweater of my daughters that I tried as batting.

Learning the Snowball quilt block and the magic of creating 1/2 square triangles at the same time! Seriously blew my mind 🤯 #quiltsky 🧶
Unsewn tshirt quilt blocks lay on a white surface. They are improvisations on the classic Snowball block. There are also 1/2 square triangles that are created during the process incorporated into the layout. The colors are deep turquoise, pinks, light teal, and hi-vis green.

Another quilt top completed! Made with mostly thrifted t-shirts, except for the snow-dyed bits my kiddo and I made after our first big snow! Tried to use quilt blocks to tell a Lake Erie story…flying geese & tumblers for the lake glass that tumbles around and we pick up as treasure 🧶 #quiltsky
A completed tshirt quilt top lays on my studio floor. A brown Boston terrier lays near the middle and looks up at the viewer. The main piece of the quilt is an Orange peel improv using snow-dyed t-shirt bits, purples, blues and, grays. It is surrounded by two other blocks that I thought evoked Lake Erie: sunset colored flying geese and lake glass colored tumblers (for the Lake glass we love to collect).

A finished watercolor painting sits on a white desk surrounded by watercolor tools. The painting is a version of an improv quilt I made out of t-shirts, riffing on the classic Orange Peels quilt block.
