This black-and-white photograph captures delicate, frost-covered wildflower seed heads against a soft, gradient sky. The composition emphasizes the intricate textures of the frozen structures, creating a contrast between the sharp details of the ice and the smooth background. The use of monochrome enhances the timeless, ethereal quality of the scene, while the shallow depth of field isolates the subject, drawing attention to the fragile beauty of nature in winter. The framing and balance between light and shadow add a poetic, almost meditative mood.

Stone monuments at Loughcrew 5,000 yo megalithic cairn in Ireland #Round #BlueSkyArtShow #ColorADay #GreenSat #EastCoastKin #Photography #Ireland
A circle of stone monuments at Loughcrew in County Meath, Ireland
“The Loughcrew Cairns are one of Ireland’s archaeological treasures and can be found just 3km east of Oldcastle, County Meath. The site comprises a group of 5,000-year-old Neolithic passage tombs.
The Loughcrew Cairns site is one of the four main passage tomb sites in Ireland, thought to date from about 3300 BC. The sites consist of cruciform chambers covered in most instances by a mound. A unique style of megalithic petroglyphs are seen there, including lozenge shapes, leaf shapes, as well as circles, some surrounded by radiating lines.

The site is spread across three hilltops, Carnbane East, Carnbane West, and Patrickstown. The Irish name for the site is Sliabh na Caillí, which means "mountain of the witch". Legend has it that the monuments were created when a giant witch, striding across the land, dropped her cargo of large stones from her apron. The orthostats and structural stones of the monuments tend to be made of local green gritstone, which was soft enough to carve, but also vulnerable to vandalism.

Situated just 3km east of Oldcastle in County Meath, the tombs are spread out over three different hills. Cairn T is one of the best preserved and most accessible tombs at Loughcrew and appears to be the central tomb of the whole complex. It faces the rising sun at the vernal (March) and autumnal (September) equinoxes which shines through the passage to illuminate symbols carved into the back wall of the chamber, corbelled roof and stunning examples of Neolithic art.”

Floundering like a fish out of water. Reminds me of the Grimm fairy tale about “The Fisherman and His Wife”. Story, a warning against unchecked greed, summarized in ALT text. Relevant today more than ever. #FishyFriday #sculture #fish #ArtYear #photography #PhotographersOfBluesky #EastCoastKin
The photo depicts a weathered bronze flounder sculpture mounted on a stone pillar above a large, moss-covered oyster shell basin, forming a fountain at the Roman Baths in Sanssouci Park, Potsdam, Germany. Water spouts from the fish’s mouth into the shell, set amid lush greenery and rustic architecture.

This “Buttbrunnen” fountain, originally cast in zinc around 1830 by sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch, playfully honors Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm (later King Friedrich Wilhelm IV) and his self-nickname “Butt,” referencing his stout build like the fish. Positioned at the Roman Baths entrance, built 1829–1840 by architects Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Ludwig Persius, it embodies the king’s romantic, Italian-inspired vision for the park. A later limestone version on Berlin’s Museumsinsel, created in 1916 by Robert Schirmer, serves as an homage to this Sanssouci original, incorporating local river motifs. The current bronze recast from 1982 preserves the patinated, naturalistic charm seen in the image.

“The Fisherman and His Wife” is a Brothers Grimm fairy tale (KHM 19) from 1812, warning against unchecked greed.

Plot Summary
A poor fisherman catches a magical talking flounder, an enchanted prince, and releases it out of pity. His greedy wife Ilsebill sends him back repeatedly to wish for escalating luxuries: a cottage, castle, church, become emperor, pope, then God’s command over sun and moon.
Each time, the flounder grants the wish with worsening storms at sea, but the fisherman obeys reluctantly. Finally, demanding divine power proves too much; the flounder revokes everything, returning them to their original filthy hovel forever.
Key Quote
“Flounder, flounder in the sea, / My wife wants, my wife wants, / What I will not say to thee.”

Can never miss an opportunity to shoot these common little monsters, #BarnacleBlenny. Just too expressive and their behavior is entertaining. #maco #fishyFriday #Acanthemblemaria #EastCoastKin #photographersUnited #oceanlife #diving #scuba #padi #foto
This is a close-up, head-on view of a very small fish peering out from a round hole in rock or coral. Only its head and upper body are visible. The fish has a blunt face with a slightly downturned mouth that looks as if it’s pouting. Its lips are dotted with tiny pale spots, giving them a beaded texture.

Above each eye are several thin, branched filaments—like delicate, spiky eyelashes or tiny antennae. These are cirri, fleshy projections common in blennies. The eyes are large relative to the head, round and dark with a coppery-gold ring, giving the fish an alert, expressive look.

The skin is mottled brown, tan, and cream with fine speckling, helping it blend perfectly with the surrounding algae-covered rock. The fish is emerging from a snug, tubular shelter—likely an empty barnacle shell—surrounded by soft green growth.

Based on these features, this appears to be a barnacle blenny (genus Acanthemblemaria). The head shape, branching cirri, spotted lips, and behavior of peeking from a fixed hole are all characteristic.

Interesting facts:

• Barnacle blennies are tiny—often only 2–5 cm long.
• They live almost their entire lives inside abandoned barnacle shells or small holes in reef rock.
• They are ambush predators, darting out to snatch plankton drifting past, then retreating instantly back into safety.
• Males often guard multiple barnacle shells containing eggs laid by different females.
• Their comical facial expressions are enhanced by mobile lips and prominent eyes, which help them judge distance when striking prey.

Despite their small size, they are fiercely territorial and will defend their chosen barnacle against intruders many times their size. Photo Credit: Gregory Rothman
