Following a van through the fog this morning and I was wondering why it had plus and minus signs on the back. Got a bit closer and realised yes, I was Today Years Old when I got the symbolism of the NICEIC logo.
Logo of the National Inspection Council of Electrical Installation Contractors. ‘NIC’ in red blocky text with a very tall ‘I’ to make a plus sign, EIC in black blocky text to make a minus sign.

Week 1 of making the #GBBO technical challenge. We start off with a recipe from @nigella.bsky.social - Coffee and Walnut cake.
A later cake, with light brown coffee icing, eight icing swirls on top each topped with a walnut half, and the side covered with chopped walnut.

A statutory demand is meant to be used for pursuing debts that are undisputed such as court judgments or contract claims to which there is no apparent defence. The museum should be able to get it set aside in court simply on the grounds that they dispute that the items were loaned.

The Orion Nebula, a roughly round region of glowing pink gas, much brighter near the centre top where gas and dust are illuminated by a tight cluster of young bright stars.

In risk management, risk is usually assessed as a combination of impact (how serious is it if this happens?) and probability (how likely is this to happen?) "10% in the next decade" and "end of humanity" puts you squarely in the bit of the AI risk matrix labelled "Butlerian Jihad Right Now".

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

That said I was once very grateful to Luton CC security who literally dragged a litigant kicking and screaming out of court in a rather unpleasant family dispute I was acting in. For someone who'd insisted on doing everything through an interpreter she had an excellent command of English swearwords.

That’s interesting to know. In England & Wales (my jurisdiction) a company can be represented by an employed in-house lawyer or even a company officer, although the latter is rare outside small claims. In major cases they usually instruct external counsel though.

[2/2] As it happens in English civil procedure the Defendant usually has the first *closing* speech, but that is because the party with the burden of proof gets the last word. Also, as we hardly ever have juries in civil trials here, we rarely bother with oral openings in such cases.)

A question from Coyote vs. Acme: in US civil cases is it normal for the Defendant to open a case, or was this pure dramatic licence to give John Cena the first word as Acme's General Counsel? [1/2]
